Banter and Chit-Chat! / Re: Occulus VR & Facebook

Lurker & I had a chance to try out an Oculus Rift at a Maker event in my town.  The dev kits were pretty grainy, but the effect was solid.  It would be fun for space combat sims, but I can't really be arsed to care.

However, if Facebook can help them invent the VR pants, they'll make back their $2B in a few weeks.

That would be the mini game found on the arcade game in the hidden IQ bar.  Infamous Pacman.

Infamous Pacman can parkour right over the walls... nothing holding that dude back!

Odins beard, I just realised how much it looks like an evil pacman

My work here is done.  ;)

Fiend, of course this makes the ghosts the good guys

Evil Pacman.  His wickedness is rivalled only by his hunger... his depraved, unceasing hunger for the undead.

I liked it.  It was super short, and the interface was "streamlined", with elements that you'd expect from an adventure game looking toward a tablet interface, and more than a few bugs.  It looks like a tech demo, a true vertical-slice, with some areas more polished than others.

In general, the level of polish was quite inconsistent, varying from "oops, that was odd" to "WOW... that's basically finalized!".  For example, all the custom fonts were in place, backgrounds looked pretty final with proper anti-aliasing, but some of the environment effects and animation triggers need work.  The animations themselves are very nice;  their animation team are definitely pros.

The opening animatic was great, and the sound-design is coming together nicely.  Unfortunately, their development schedule has voices coming in near the end of production, so there are none (perhaps due to the Two Guys roots in triple-A development, where voices are recorded last?).  Maybe it's a Linux demo bug, haha!

It is missing a TON of the writing, and there is lots of placeholder text, aside from it being very short (perhaps shorter than this forum post), so it's a bit difficult to evaluate exactly what the final product is going to be like.  However, from what was there, the tone of Scott's writing is definitely present, the music sounds like Ken Allen at his best, and the player-controllable Rooter character adds a "buddy adventure" mechanic which is really cool.

Beyond that, I can't really give you any semblance of objectivity.  I have a double dose of subjective distortion on that project.  First, I'm such a horrible SQ fanboy, I had a hard time not giggling with glee while the demo was still downloading, and leaving it up and running in the title screen to hear the music a few times over.  Second, I backed that project past the point of confirmation bias, so through the lens of my pledge it's easy for me to dismiss flaws that others may have a problem with.

I think it's going to be an awesome and funny game, and that you should go to guysfromandromeda.com/store/ and give the Two Guys your $15 pre-order, not so much because my opinion should be trusted, but because doing so will make me happy.  Then I will say "thank you, rugged!".  I know that your pre-order money will go toward making the game better.

Fuck Quest was an original AGI Sierra style game by Rich Eter, who worked on SQ2 with us.  It's out there, it's fun and vulgar if you can find it.

So, this happened today, courtesy of Cara Ellison.

Now adding "bonerzone" to my lexicon...

I love that Syracuse & Toronto are their own countries.

Greenlight is stupid.

I totally agree with you, but it's the best only way for an indie game to make it on Steam right now.

FTFY.

I consider the act of getting published to be distributed on Steam as becoming "less" independent.  So it's a way for a game to make it onto Steam, but not a self-published title.

Not that being published is always the wrong decision for every developer, but 99% of all self-published titles are required to go through Greenlight.  The 1% just get lucky.  There's no rhyme or reason that I've been able to divine as to how those lucky few get through.

And then you have Paranautical Activity, which got published by Adult Swim to get on Steam, and basically got screwed back into Greenlight anyway  :-[

I have no idea what other indie adventures are being released this year, but it would be really cool if an Indie Adventure Christmas bundle could be put together and distributed.

Yeah, you really don't want to release in a bundle, though.  It's a really bad idea.  You want as many full-price sales as possible at launch, and then run sales or bundles once that tapers off.  Watch what Wadjet Eye does;  Dave is wicked smart about the "long-tail" nature of his catalog.  Primordia has had hardly any sales (for example, having launched 12/2012) but we see the Blackwell games and Gemini Rue on sale quite frequently.

I'd dearly like to see the Humble Bundle guys do a themed bundle, a Humble Adventure Bundle, full of cross-platform graphic adventures, someday.  That would be so incredibly cool to me!  QFI would fit nicely in that fantasy bundle, I would say, and would help justify the feverish lengths to which we are going in the AGS engine porting community, especially if QFI could be joined by other Kickstarted AGS adventure games (like Stacy's Jack Houston project, Himalaya's project, and maybe Alasdair's Nelly Cootalot sequel, for example).

I think I've seen this show before... didn't it come on right after Electric Company?  Or was it before those old U.S. reruns of Doctor Who?  Tom Baker, naturally...

Great work, Jerm!!  Every time I convince myself that I would tinker a bit with 16-bit sprites and maybe make something not awful, I see one of your time-lapse pieces and am reminded how utterly shite I am at the visual arts.

Brilliant music;  reminds me of the mountain pass area in the demo (same track?).

Comic Sans. I would have to be Comic Sans. >:(

It's like the Cotton-Eyed Joe of fonts.  It's not even properly kerned, for f***'s sake!!!

I seem to remember them always looking something more like a dot-matrix font with a tight pattern, like JD LCD Rounded:

or, even better, Transaction:

I'm geeking out on fonts, now, aren't I?  Gosh, I guess you all know how boring I am (if it wasn't apparent before)...

We're really closing in on completing ALL the backgrounds for Quest For Infamy - at this point, we have over 170 for you to explore.  It's... well, frankly crazy.  But it's a pretty big adventure game world - the kind of large world I always wanted to explore in a game.  It's amazing that we can do all this now.

Umm... what?!  I'm hard-pressed to come up with a point-and-click adventure beyond ~100 areas.  170 is beyond crazy, it's flat-out brain-gobbling.  Can anyone come up with another hand-painted VGA graphic adventure with 170 backgrounds?  Anywhere near that many?

I do believe we're in for an amazing treat.

Also... I'd surely love to see my sprite and/or portrait :-D

Just picked up my degree classification grade....I got a first!

 ;D

Congratulations!  My lady Lurker totally called it (top marks!).  You surely deserve it.

Maybe if I get requests, I'll eat some other disgusting food (not Marmite) and do my Scottish accent in the video.

Must be Hákarl followed by Salmiak

No musical request... I truly believe that nothing can top Blackthorne Shatner's Girl in the Tower.
