Title: the YouTube thread
Post by: DrSlash on July 17, 2013, 08:06:33 PM
This one is a must, I think. Especially considering I'm somewhat addicted to YouTube - I used to spend about three hours there everyday. Not so much lately - 'cause of a crappy internet connection. It's also a great way to improve my English, by the way!

So, feel free to post any videos here (well, at least those that don't violate the board's rules) or discuss the vids posted by other members.

This is Crash Course, which is an awesome educational show about historical (and other) topics.  This is the most recent episode from the US History edition, but there's also a great World History edition, too.  I can't get enough of these episodes.  I've even started using them in my classes, as they provide a lot of great information in a humorous, palatable, and bite-sized way.  Good shit.

Anyone here ever watch Knightmare? It's a British show from the 90's which mixed RPG game elements and virtual reality and the contestants had to navigate through a blue screen dungeon and solving puzzles. Anyway, for Youtube Geek Week they've done a brand new episode so it's definitely worth a look. I used to watch this show all the time in the 90's.

I hate to post my own video here, but part of the joke is seeing how many views it brings in. This is my response to the revelation that Microsoft is paying Youtube producers $3 for every thousand views on videos that promote the XBOne. (No, this video doesn't count - not only does it not meet the criteria, I haven't been invited as part of a network and I don't ever get any money for any videos as a matter of principle.)

Since there hasn't been much activity in this thread for a while, I've decided to post this video demonstration of a new town for a fan-made Heroes of Might & Magic III add-on: Horn of the Abyss. Heroes 3 has been my favorite videogame since it first came out in 1999 and it's really nice to see how almost fifteen years after its release, fans still create new quality content that stays so true to the style of the original game.

We have/had plenty of regional differences here, too, but when commercial radio began there was a consensus to us a standardize pronunciation. Because it was deemed the most readily understandable across all regions, Ohio Midwestern was chosen. This has had a bit of an homogenizing effect. Also, given how transient we have become since WWII.

You might speak your simplified / dumbed down version of English. Us Australian's still speak the Queen's English, just with a few cooler words thrown in.
Title: Re: the YouTube thread
Post by: Blackthorne on April 05, 2014, 08:11:14 AM
You mean we speak a "more awesomer and most bestest" version of English, without having to WORRY about a pesky Queen or King or Duke or Earl or whatever, dir.

Seriously, though - I live in New York State, and even here - there are several accents just in our state.  When most people hear "New York" they think of the downstate or Brooklyn style accents.  You know - some people would call it "Mobster!"  But upstate, we actually sound more like we're from the mid-West, especially when you get more North and West, like Buffalo.  Up in the North and East, we can even sound more Canadian or even Vermont/New Hampshire-New England-ish.

Also, the place in the world that is the closest to Elizabethan English is in the Shenandoah Valley, VA. But then a linguistical phenomena is for language to change faster in the motherland than in its colonies. Even British English has changed more than US or Australian in the past half century or so. This is evident if you listen to older recordings. Language is a mercurial thing.

Great example of that here (sorry, I never remember how to post videos in this forum) where a Shakespeare play is performed with the version of English it was originally written in.  It's not the whole play, just an interview with some examples, but I found it really interesting.

I'd like to take a moment of your time to share a really funny series of LPs called Mostly Walking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuspVV-EPOc&list=PLgmCLtUkEutI_xMjQoH17SCPUxVvLtiSH (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuspVV-EPOc&list=PLgmCLtUkEutI_xMjQoH17SCPUxVvLtiSH)

It is a group of 3 guys in their 30s who play through adventure games from Sierra to LucasArts to Double Fine. They play classics like KQ6, Indiana Jones and The Fate of Atlantis, The Dig, Grim Fandango Remastered etc... but the funniest ones are KQ6 and Indiana Jones, so if you can handle the fact that they don't play these games very seriously and that they sometimes make stupid mistakes, you should, nay you MUST, check them out. I literally laughed so much that it started to hurt on many occasions. :D

(sorry for repost if you've already seen this in the other thread, but I decided to delete that one and post it here instead [seems like more of a fitting place])

So, I'd imagine all of us are wondering when we'll get to deal with this issue in the Quest for Infamy games, so I think this is appropriate to post. Counter Monkey Bard Spoony asks...what's an Anti-Paladin?

I'm curious if any of this may or may not be hitting close to the mark for IQ's thinking on the matter.

Blackguards in general RPG terms are the opposite of Paladins (in World of Warcraft they say the Death Knight is).

Some random Space Quest -related stuff I've made recently just for the hell of it.  It's a 3D scene of the Rocket Bar from Ulence Flats (which you might or might not have already seen on my twitter (https://twitter.com/DrSlash)) and a version of SQ1 ending theme remixed using modern sound libraries.  Enjoy!

Was rewatching Raiders of the Lost Ark today and that reminded me that this scene is probably the main reason why I started studying archaeology and oriental languages in the first place... Makes me wonder how many modern historians and archaeologists were inspired by this masterpiece of a movie, heh.

I PROCLAIM THIS THREAD'S REVIVAL!

@Klytos (http://www.infamous-quests.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=8), these are for you. I was expecting a Lies segment to be included as per usual, but it didn't appear this weekend, nor did a "music video" version of the ending piece. Regardless, I give you Extra History...on Ned Kelly.
