Title: London 2012 open ceremony
Post by: Broomie on July 28, 2012, 11:27:58 AM
So who watched the open ceremony to the London 2012 Olympics? I thought it was fantastic, really made me proud to be British. Preps to Danny Boyle for making one hell of a British spectacle.

How about others who watched it? Liked it? Confused? Best bits? Worst bits?

I'm excited to have the Olympics but I'm not stepping one foot in central London. It'll be so damned busy but I'm happy to watch some events in the comfort of my own home. ;)

I liked it; but for the American Broadcast, NBC had Matt Lauer and Meredith Veira giving commentary over the whole thing - their banter was annoying and banal, and they kept "explaining" things.  I know some Americans might not "get" it, but just let us watch it.  It was tedious and annoying because of that.

Also, Paul McCartney looked really sick to me.  Though, hey, Mike Oldfield showed up to play live!  That was sick.

Steve, you're killing me!  The appropriate usage AND the slang usage in the same line.  I should smack you.

I loved it.

I got up at 5:30am to watch it, that in itself is a miracle of biblical proportions.

I think the Artic Monkey's suck, I know this sounds like an old person comment, but I couldn't understand a fucking thing they said. And they hacked and slashed through Come Together. Horrible. Mr Bean was funny, and I don't usually find him funny. Mike Oldfield was good. McCartney was his usual professional self, thought his voice was a bit rough to start but that sorted quickly and man he can work a crowd. Hey Jude, as the biggest selling Beatles single was a solid choice to close out the ceremony. Even an idiot could sing along with the nah-nah-nahs. Also enjoyed the James Bond bit.

David Beckham looked like he swallowed the canary driving the speedboat up the Themes.

I didn't for a minute understand the NHS thing. Felt like a political statement to me which wasn't what it should have been about. I mean, you've got socialised medicine. Big fucking deal. So do a lot of countries, including mine. In fact, it's pretty much only the American's who don't, because they're terrified of any government which they themselves vote in. Weirdos.

Yeah I was a bit surprised to see the Arctic Monkeys. I generally thought they'd have used Muse but I've heard they're being used for the closing ceremony instead. I really Arctic Monkeys studio albums but I've heard they can be a bit dull live so this was quite evident of that. The only thing that makes them energetic is because people love singing a long to some of the songs from the first album. But that's not an old person comment, they're from Sheffeld it's difficult to understand them whenever.

To me the whole NHS thing was just a symbol of Britain and that we're proud of it. It didn't come across as a political statement but just simply saying despite it's flaws we're proud to have such a long running British service.

Least favorite part was the whole phone texting love story thing. Thought that was pretty stupid and the choreography was awful, just people jumping around and Dizzie Rascal. But everything else was such a spectacle, really loved it.

I originally wasn't going to watch it, since the Olympics do not interest me at all, but then I figured that I may as well see what we came up with. And I really enjoyed it, well I enjoyed the first 90 mins of it. I thought the farmland turning into a massive forge that made the rings was really good. I thought the celebration of children's literature was really good, but the celebration of British music I thought didn't really need to be there.

The best bits were easily James Bond picking up the Queen (which shows that Her Majesty has a good sense of humour) and Mr Bean playing Chariots of Fire.

But as for the bad bits, why did they really need to have all of the teams come out in order. That went on for far too long. I can understand showing off all the competitors, but you could tell that most people just switched it off (and left the stadium) and returned just to see the Queen officially open it. All they really needed to do was have the flag bearers come out at once, would saved time and peoples attention span. And as people have already said, why did they choose the Arctic Monkeys? Of all the British bands out there, they chose them for the Opening Ceremony? Why not have the Who or the Rolling Stones, they are both a lot more famous and would have been a better choice for this moment.

But finally, and this is really a nitpick, but why wasn't the Doctor present? We had James Bond and Mary Poppins, why not another fictional character that is the best of British? Would it had really been that difficult to have the TARDIS appear on the field, if only for a cameo?

Damn, people, I can only agree with every single word in this whole thread!
