Right I think that's enough internet for me this evening.

Since there hasn't been much activity in this thread for a while, I've decided to post this video demonstration of a new town for a fan-made Heroes of Might & Magic III add-on: Horn of the Abyss. Heroes 3 has been my favorite videogame since it first came out in 1999 and it's really nice to see how almost fifteen years after its release, fans still create new quality content that stays so true to the style of the original game.

PS for the same reasons I joined IA in the first place - to breathe new life into the old games we love so much.

A nice tour of the different dialects of the British Isles. I only sound like the London one when I'm tired or drunk.

Whoa whoa WHOA.  HOLD UP.

You mean it's not all cockney?!?
Lambonius...Rarely has our moderating team encountered a forumite as consistently unpleasant as you, and you've burned through far more chances than you deserved. A person really has to try hard to be so obnoxious that they're banned from AG, but you've managed it and then some.

Wow.  Such a variation over such a relatively small amount of area...

Good thing we all speak "Amurican" over here...

We have/had plenty of regional differences here, too, but when commercial radio began there was a consensus to us a standardize pronunciation. Because it was deemed the most readily understandable across all regions, Ohio Midwestern was chosen. This has had a bit of an homogenizing effect. Also, given how transient we have become since WWII.

You might speak your simplified / dumbed down version of English. Us Australian's still speak the Queen's English, just with a few cooler words thrown in.

You mean we speak a "more awesomer and most bestest" version of English, without having to WORRY about a pesky Queen or King or Duke or Earl or whatever, dir.

Seriously, though - I live in New York State, and even here - there are several accents just in our state.  When most people hear "New York" they think of the downstate or Brooklyn style accents.  You know - some people would call it "Mobster!"  But upstate, we actually sound more like we're from the mid-West, especially when you get more North and West, like Buffalo.  Up in the North and East, we can even sound more Canadian or even Vermont/New Hampshire-New England-ish.

Also, the place in the world that is the closest to Elizabethan English is in the Shenandoah Valley, VA. But then a linguistical phenomena is for language to change faster in the motherland than in its colonies. Even British English has changed more than US or Australian in the past half century or so. This is evident if you listen to older recordings. Language is a mercurial thing.

Great example of that here (sorry, I never remember how to post videos in this forum) where a Shakespeare play is performed with the version of English it was originally written in.  It's not the whole play, just an interview with some examples, but I found it really interesting.

That's the region I'm originally from...  We refer to our dialect as "lack of accent."   ;)
