if you want character portraits in a game how do you do that in ags

Yep, Bt sent you to the right place for sure!  I would also suggest consulting the AGS manual.  EVERYTHING you will need is in there.  When I started with IA/IQ I knew how to program but I knew nothing about AGS.  The manual has been the biggest help along the way for me and as I can't find answers in the manual, I go to the AGS forums for additional help.

The quick answer is to change the setting in your game options to have Sierra Style Portraits.  You would then need to assign a sprite/view to be the your portrait for the character in the charater attributes.  To animate the portrait or to have it lipsync takes a bit more to explain.  But like Bt said, they are awesome at helping people out over there.

When we did the best quest ever over on IA, I played Manhunter for the first time.  Like you said, way ahead of their time!  I think had they released Manhunter a few years later, it may have caught more steam and perhaps they would have been able to make a few more games in the series.

how do you remove the oil gland from the beast

He was messing with you.  The real thing to do is go back to where you me Brattle and look around.  There is something you should be able to use to make your own oil.  Just remember you need somewhere to put the oil.

Just go back and talk to those who you might consider a brigand or a rogue then.  Help someone different than Prospero.

Ouch... writing code without power is miserable.  It's a bit like trying to eat food without a mouth.

I suspect that, considering you have a family, coding wasn't top priority during that episode  ;)

Yep, like, not possible at all.  :)  This week I went out and bought a laptop specifically for coding QFI.  That helps a bit because I am not tied down to a desktop!  And yes, family was the number one priority.  My wife and kids, as well as my parents who live close, are in their 70s and were dealing with the exact same stuff!

Where do you live collector?
Columbus

Yeah.  I am right outside Washing DC and it was the exact same for us.  Just nasty, and no power.  Fortunately for me, I have a basement and was able to sleep downstairs.  Down there it only got to about 85 degrees.  The main level was the same as yours.  The other big problem is that for the first few days no one else had power either.  You couldn't find a fast food joint to get some relief or anything.  There was just nowhere to go.
