So... what about an Art Book/Strategy Guide/Hint Book with decoder window for Quest For Infamy? Yay or nay?

Well, the reason I ask about interest is because to make something like this, we'd probably have to use crowd funding (Kickstarter, et. al) to raise the initial kind of money we'd need to be able to make these - not only to pay the price for the production of the book, the creation of the custom decoder window, eBook versions, etc - and to pay someone to construct the layout of the book; to arrange the text written, the artwork, and create the decoder text to be seen - etc.

It wouldn't be a really high goal project, at least to do an initial run of say - 100-150 copies - probably with a basic goal of $3,000 to $5,000 for an initial production of that - but we'd have stretch goal ideas for a larger print run, hardcover editions, etc. I know we'd love to produce something like this, but I wanted to not only gauge the response and want for an item like this from all you people - but if we do decide to run a crowdfunding campaign, to get your input on what you'd like to see from the campaign.

We don't wish to tread into something like this lightly, and you fans have been our only support in this - we don't have any corporate sponsors or the like, so keeping you involved in the process is very important to us.

So - it's really important to me (Bt) and the rest of the team to get your thoughts. Would you pledge so something like this? Any ideas for the campaign? I know the book is a physical reward - but we'd be doing a eBook version of it too for Nook/Kindle/Pdf - but those would require one physical element; red decoder glasses you can wear as you stare at the screen, etc. Anyway - Thoughts?

I love Matte Paintings in films.  Some of my favorites?

The warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, for one.

I found this really cool site that has a bunch.  I'll be posting more, but check this out if you get a sec.

IQ Chat / Why.... Blackthorne?
« on: July 28, 2013, 10:28:32 AM »
Some of us around here have net-handles.  Me, well you can see I use "Blackthorne" which has become "Bt" over the years.  It's a funny story behind Blackthorne, and it's the handle I have used on-line since 1990.  Since I was originally playing Sierra games 23 years ago now.

Many people often think it stems from the Interplay published game "Blackthorne" which came out for the SNES in 1994, but my usage predates that - I was 12 in 1990, and a voracious reader.  My grandfather was a big reader, and I remember these large tomes that lived on on his shelf - "The Godfather" by Mario Puzo, "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, "Exodus" by Leon Uris, "The Source" & "Cheasepeake" by James Michener are some that stick out - along with "Shogun" by James Clavell.  So one day, I took down Shogun and started reading it - it was definitely a struggle and a bit above me, but on my visits, I would read a couple dozen pages or so every time - and the protagonist of that novel was John Blackthorne.

Being 12, I thought that was a cool name, and when I started to dial into BBSs, I used that name as my login ID.  In the early day of modem and BBSs, I used it on every site - and you'd find users from all over keeping the same ID, establishing an identity.  So, I have used this for over 23 years now.

Nice bit of random trivia.  I'm sure everyone has stories behind their net handles.  I'm always interested in hearing them.

Damn fuel pump went in my car.  Have no car; quoted ridiculous price to fix, yet do not even have close to enough money to get even a shitty new car.

I'm going to scream and poop my pants at the same time here.  Excuse me for a minute.

YYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH.

Carry on, friends.

Hey friends, kiddies, rogues, barbarians and hairdressers of all kinds,

Bt here.  Just going a little insane after staring at game code all day long.  Yeah, it's been another one of those long days of working on the game.  Slowly, but surely, things are starting to come together.  I've really been working hard and putting in little touches here and there - some sound effects for more ambience - NPCs to talk to and explore... little animations that make the difference.  Interactions that are interesting and sometimes funny.

I can tell you one thing - this world of QFI is vast.  I did a ton of work today, and I feel like I didn't even touch much of the entire game!

It's been great though - We're almost entirely done with the background art now - I think I can count on one hand (twice) how many backgrounds we have left.  Jason, Ivan and Fizzii have been working like crazy to get them done.  Lambonious, in particular, has been working like a beast monster, and I think that he might turn into a mad scientist when this is all over.

Jenny has turned it several new portraits for characters, and I added several into the game's build recently, and it's always amazing how much character they add... when Jeremy's sprites, Jenny's portraits and my writing come together to breathe life into a character... it's amazing!  I love it... I get giddy like a kid.

Well, it's the 30th anniversary of King's Quest this year, too.  30 years.  Some of you haven't even been alive 30 years.  Sadly, I have, AND THEN SOME.  But, hey, who's counting.... except, well, the Earth....

Anyway, 30 years of KQ.... that adventure game classic.  Without it, I wouldn't be here, and I know many of you can say the same thing.

So, yeah, I was working all day on this, and to take a break, I came out here to write this to you.  Just to expel some of my crazy, but also to thank all those who support us... this is going to be crazy fun when we get it all done, lemme tell you!!

We'll keep keeping you posted - I'll be sending out a Kickstarter Update soon, too, with some exclusive pictures for everyone!

Thanks again, peeps.

« on: June 04, 2013, 06:41:34 PM »
Jon Stoll is what Hogwarts might refer to as a wizard.

He not only crafts beautiful backgrounds, but he's an amazing pixel artist and animator as well.

Watch him work his magic on this background from The Volksville Woods - and see the finished version in Demo 2.0!!

IQ Chat / Boston
« on: April 15, 2013, 09:32:00 PM »
Boston.

The streets of Boston bleed liberty. They have for over three centuries. From it's hearty cobblestones and tenacious buildings, the heart of liberty and the pursuit of happiness was forged. Boston has seen rebellion - the symbolic dumping of tea into the harbor in protest. It has seen the blood of its citizens run along its fine streets in a massacre that proceeded freedom. It has endured as a cherished city that saw the birth of a nation, the rise of it's fine citizens and the growth of its country.

Boston has endured. It has grown - it has expanded, it me the industrial revolution with great fervor and the fires of industry from this great city commingled with the forges of many other great cities to expand our country's wealth and bring prosperity to our people.

Boston has maintained. The cultural heritage of our patriot fathers - men who founded the ideals, documents and tenets that our country was founded on lives on, active, in this city of living history.

Boston endures. It gives many people the joy and hope of what it meant to be a successful immigrant in the early 20th century - and you can see the joy in celebration every St. Patrick's Day.

Boston flourishes. Art, music, literature - many great works of human creation have poured out of this great city, bringing joy, adventure, mystery, beauty and mischief to an adoring public.

Boston adapts. The city weathered the uncertain economic times of the late 20th century and early 21st century, constantly forging ahead in spite of tremendous odds.

Again, the streets of our Beloved Boston run red with the blood of innocents - innocents who were ruthlessly attacked by men of cowardly means. By people who wish to instill fear on the good people of the world.

We must not despair. We must not forsake humanity in this time, as it is not humanity who is forsaken at this time - but a small few who are so afraid of life that they seek to destroy it, to keep themselves insular. Away from change.

But we will endure. We will flourish. We, the good of humanity will not let this stand. We will not be scared into our homes, cursing out fellow brothers, and live in fear of each other. We will not let these few men destroy the bonds of fellowship that join every decent man, woman and child of this great nation, and of this amazing planet. We will flourish. We will rise. We will not be deterred.

We, like Boston, will stand. United. With liberty and justice for all.

Quest for Infamy / SPOILER - A Small Map of The Game
« on: March 27, 2013, 08:34:49 PM »
Hey backers!

Okay - here's a little taste for you.  This is a map of the game, so far.  There are some backgrounds that aren't on here, but this is the basic layout of the game.  The map is small, and details aren't clear at this point - I don't want you to spoil the thing yet!  But I wanted to give you a taste of the size of this game.

Hope you enjoy.
