Just Another Old Game
« on: September 28, 2014, 02:29:03 PM »
Hey y'all,

It's my first post on these forums but I hope that there is no harm in it if it's off-topic. Now to the topic itself, I don't know how many of you know a game called Time Gate: Knight's Chase, but if there are some of you who do and have any ideas on how to get it to run on a modern computer (running Win7 x64 [Home]) then your help would be much appreciated. I can't seem to get it to work with dosbox, but I might be doing something wrong...

Thanks in advance!  8)

i got it working on dosbox, just make sure to visit the dosbox site to see its compatibility to which ver of dosbox you use

then make a separate dosbox config JUST for that game,

as long as the game says compatible i can get ALMOST every game to work
there ..are a few i still cant, sadly

cybermage for one.. if anyone can help with that one! hoooah

and im a dos freak sooo
and emu freak.. but a few games arent compatible

and to run a virtual os, seems the only way to run games as such
booo

to no backwards compat in anything anymore

even wii u stopped playing gc and wii games ... pfft
same as wii stopped gc games (mine has a slot for the cd of gc and controller ports most vers removed it)
ps3 1.0 and 1.1 play 88% of ps1 games  where all other vers wont play anything

xbox.. is NOT backwards compat  (xbox one) hence why fable anni was released vs TLC that no one on xbox land can play  tis why i wont buy a modern console

(i do have ps3 and ps4 but i didnt buy em) gifts, and they sit as doorstops)

Timegate: Knight's Chase - Infogrames (1996)
Tested By: Jiri

runnable  -  playable  -  supported
100% (supported) height=8

DOSBox version: 0.72 (supported)

runnable  -  playable  -  supported
90% (supported) height=8

DOSBox version: 0.61 (supported)

so get .72 and rip it up

People overcomplicate DOSBox. Just create a shortcut to it on the desktop drag the executable for whatever game you want to play onto the shortcut. It will run DOSBox with the default settings which is usually good enough.

so true klytos  only very few games require you to adjust stuff in the config

ive ran into about 1/10 games that need config editing, the rest.. nope

again with cybermage though, noper, not even with editing the config

also most GOG games that come with dosbox, kinda mess up, as its a generic config that gog has no hand in making,
some of them are even BLANK
bad move, anyway soooo true on the over-complicating of dosbox mate

but in those rare cases...
:P

well i didnt mean it like that!
hard to decipher text meaning

i just meant your name kinda hints that you are a pro at dosbox

annnyway most dont read much of manuals or instructions
im one of those also, but in dosbox terms well yea its in there, go to the homesite and give a good read for the faqs
:P

hehe
youll get that game working in no time

howwwwever what klytos said  doesnt work for CYBERMAGE
another game i wish was remade,
and again if you look at the dosbox homesite for compat , there are MANY games that require a virtual os to be installed (or a dual boot which ahh nooo) not with modern os's they get confused at "whos the boss"

on a side note.. i used to think the song TINY DANCER was HOLD ME CLOSE NOW TONY DANZZAAA

haha no joke there
funny yes
but true haha

Ahh nope, I'm not a pro at dosbox, I know only as much as I need to play some of the good old games. My name isn't related to anything fancy like that hehe.

I guess I'll have to visit the ol' dosbox site then in the future. :P

Cheers.

i got it working on dosbox, just make sure to visit the dosbox site to see its compatibility to which ver of dosbox you use

No, that list means very little. It is by user contribution, not by any official declaration. The DOSBox version listed is merely an indication of the version use for the entry. If a game is listed as having been tested with 0.65, it just means that no one has retested the game since 0.65 was the latest. Anyway, DOSBox has reached a point that you can expect nearly all DOS games to run. There are occasionally the odd ones that pop up, but most simply work. The few that have issues are usually because the game itself is broken. There is a long running thread in the beta tester's forum of possible broken programs. If it is because of a problem with DOSBox, DOSBox usually gets patched. If it a problem with the game itself, someone may create a fix just for that game, usually in the form of a TSR to be run in DOSBox along with the game.

I cannot stress it enough, ALWAYS use the latest. While it is possible that something can be broken in newer versions, that is relatively rare. Also, if there has been a regression, it is better to report it. Each new version represents a substantial improvement in compatibility and performance. And never ask for help on VOGONS for an old version of DOSBox.

Using unique configs can be a good solution for the games that do not like the default settings. Usually it it is more for the convenience of automating the mounting.

isnt that really what i said collector .. like 90-99% of games.. i can run

there are those odd few that WILL NOT run no matter what you do without a virtual os box
or dual boot..
sorry did you read my first few posts saying.. i can get most games to emulate, and showed the %

the list does make a diff just fyi,  it does show those few games that ARENT compatible with it (even the ones in red some I can get working dont get me wrong just a few stubborn ones..) nope

one like redguard needs glidewrappers (took me ages to find the right combo

but.. im not sure why you quoted me saying the list isnt accurate or dont pay attention to it.. shrug, you just really said everything I said, I was just giving info to dosbox there..

sigh

I finally got down to trying to run the thing. Using the tips you guys gave me, I got a bit further from zero lol. Now it says "Please run this installation under Windows 3.1 or higher." when I try to run SVGAMAX.exe, but that's about it. :/

@Kaldire, I was mostly referring to your statement about the use of that list, especially about "which ver of dosbox you use".  The list is mostly meaningless and you should always use the latest.
