Title: Defunct Publisher Sierra Reveals New Website
Post by: Unfamous on August 08, 2014, 04:34:53 AM
A new website for Sierra Entertainment has surfaced online and indicates that the game publisher will be making an appearance at this year's Gamescom. The site plays a brief trailer that animates into a new logo for the company but makes no mention of any games.

Sierra was first founded in 1979 and was eventually absorbed into Activision Blizzard before it was officially closed down in 2008. The organisation is best known for publishing Half-Life, F.E.A.R, and Counter-Strike.

Note it's still (c) Activision so they're just using the brand for something.

It wouldn't surprise me to see old titles released on iOS and android.  It could be some easy money for them.  As for seeing anything new out of them, they did have a deal at one point with telltale to reboot Kings Quest, so they could be going for some reboots of old games as well.  Time will tell.

Anxious to see what they're up to here. I really hope they don't use the IP to make silly Freemium apps for mobile and tablet. 'Graham is feeling tired. Please wait 17:14 mins or pay 5 silvers to carry on.' *shudder*

Well, it came to VU through a rather circuitous route. Around 1997 CUC was the first to buy Sierra (fraudulently). Then CUC merged with HFS to become Cendant. After Cendant went under with criminal investigations into their fraud, Havas Interactive bought Sierra. It was under Havas that "Chainsaw Monday" occurred in 1999. In a buisness alliance in 2000 Havas with Vivendi, Seagram and Canal+ formed Vivendi Universal.

And if it is, who cares really?  Even if they make really bad games and "soil" the franchises, I think if anything it will draw attention to the remakes and originals which isn't bad for the genre.

Yeah.  I honestly don't even care about the prospect of new games from the Sierra IPs.  Every bit of joy that I get from Sierra adventure gaming comes from the community and our work within it.  Nothing else really matters to me.

yea I know allllll about that :P
I was at the oakhurst facility as a kid when that shut down (before sierra totally did) but yea
sierra and LA have the same sorta  days of dismissing all
think LA was on friday  sierra yep a monday  I hate mondays lol

and yea  its like double fine is redoing the now owned disney  grim fandango!
and no way in hell if roberta or ken are involved will sierra do any pay to get things ever unless its swag
but if they dont get the ips or at least the ability to use them ( like double fine and tim did for grim) well ick

again any publicity in this era at this point, is good
we got gold rush (ip is OWNED now by sunlight) OWNED
sooo things CAN happen..

:P
ty again for the posts and dont be afraid to check akrils site out esp her writings  (3 kq mini novels)

yea roberta TRIED to make a kq game and it was pretty well into dev  in TTG's before that was also pulled

hmm

after the bad rep idk all the failed kq games in the recent times damned ips'
might be neat to know if they plan on getting partial use back at least
not owning but able to create

idk

also mask of eternity was a game before its time,
it was poop but, think of the engines that were out,
if only they used the westwood studios lands of lore 2 engine, woulda been a bit nicer
but now adays that game could do a great thing in revamp hd etc even a unity engine (but you cant battle like they did  hmm)

oohh cant wait to say hi to old friends again!
thanks for the update bt

Their are rumors that Activision are set to reveal details of a new Kings Quest at gamescom, I find the idea of a new KQ only mildly interesting as I believe we already have the spiritual successors to the quest games.
What I will find encouraging is if this is one of Activision's major announcements. It was amazing how big a deal Sony made of Grim Fandango at E3, now if we have Activision making a similar fuss about a new Kings Quest it will show just how far the industry has come with regards to accepting adventure games again.

To me it sounds totally new, with the freedom to go back to events, lands, etc. and embellish as they will be stories being told.  I honestly love the idea.  It allows for new players to be introduced to the story without having to relive the old games.  They can stray from Canon so to speak because it is an old man talking about stories from the past.  Love it.

"A new King's Quest adventure game is Sierra's other new project. Developed by The Odd Gentlemen, the team responsible for The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, the new game is a 'fully reimagined' version of King's Quest coming in 2015. 'King Graham--revered as the greatest adventurer to ever live--shares his life's adventures with his curious granddaughter, Gwendolyn,' today's announcement explains. 'It is through these tales that Gwendolyn discovers the true greatness of her grandfather.' "

Gwendolyn...an amusing choice of name.

I await further details.

1st,  wtf they said sierra abandoned us?
hhuuhh
yea uh, no
This I know to be bs off the bat, Roberta and Ken and well EVERYONE was sad, depressed and upset
hell roberta and ken even stopped everything though they could have made a new company, or games

they just went on their boat and lead a HAPPY life to get rid of the loss of their baby
(sierra.. not a real baby!)

roberta cried, ken made a pensive face for months, al lowe made bad jokes as thats his way of dealing with stuff making others or himself laugh(its my way of dealing with stuff too)
some departments didnt suffer the closure right away like the oakhurst facility(after it moved it became Yosemite entertainment as the HQ moved to washinton with broderbund) , that went away first..
some got angry and moved on to making games again, some just left
but NONE abandoned its fans, ever
...ever
Yes during the CUC merger they did SELL the company, but they had no clue what was going to happen with it, they remained and were not pleased with how things were going, so they just left, literally packed up and quit..

after that sierra, or the good people of the original company had nothing to do with CUC or its reasons for the "Cedant" bs happenings that lay in wait for all remaining
somehow all was just seen as a numbers game, there was huge net loss (which anyone should have seen would happen after such a merger) esp when the company was full of heart, and the sale of it to some corp without one grr .. ahh
so yea 99'  bad year, loads lost jobs that even tried to STAY and not ABANDON.. they got fired.. doesnt sound like sierra abandoned anyone, roberta and ken tried to make sierra bigger, sold it to a corp who then raped everyone due to bad numbers, bottom line truly... sickk ahh that quote made me so upset

sick to say such a thing. whoever said it, ahh

rugged, as for him saying its his fav series of all time, good!
but really?
I have loads of games but not many have series in them
soo whats there to compare it to? other sierra games?
witcher?
idk
i like zork but im a nerd like that for text parser advents

but its a good sign

also found this quote which is awesome and again shows NO ABANDONMENT
"Sierra’s goal is to find and work with gifted up-and-coming indie developers working on their own amazing projects or who are passionate about working on great Sierra IP. We’re in talks with a large number of other indie devs, and we can’t wait to share more details with fans in the near future.>

sounds like the passion never left, so again I say YES and I cant wait and cheers for making it BACK! Even in a new form, like a caterpillar  into a raging phoenix butterfly

Sorry about that post, prolly TMI
I wasnt there when the first layoffs happened,
but I was around everyone who was layed off then and over the next few years
I felt, the pain, and sadness and frustration

but when a company is small, and grows bigger its heart tends to muddle around in a bigger cage,
from a financial standpoint, selling sierra for  I think it was 1.7 billion dollars or something, was a great move! but no one could foresee what would happen next... once they did, they left (roberta and ken)

so without that same heart, the shallow corp tried and failed at making games, most flopped.
do i need to mention LSL magnum cum ? nahh  Al lowe wasnt even consulted! ahh nooo!
this is what I meant btw in another forum where I posted that QFI was fan made not official,
wasnt an insult,
same as HQ was fan made,
vs hero u which will be original dev made!
but on that note.. they have a run for their money with QFI haha

annyway
sorry again, just ahh this quote is still buggin me

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/gamenews.php?id=121772 (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/gamenews.php?id=121772)

"We're very proud of what we created all those years ago with Sierra Online," says original Sierra founder Ken Williams, "and today's news about carrying Sierra forward as an indie-specific brand is very encouraging. We look forward to seeing Sierra's independent spirit live on, and are especially excited to see what The Odd Gentlemen will do with 'King’s Quest.'"

It's only a press release, but it's nice to know Ken and Roberta are at least "in the loop" on knowing about this, even if they're not directly involved.

Well, they did negotiate the license to Jane. They might not be directly involved with its production, but the latest move indicates that they had plans for the Sierra IP when they awarded that license to Jane's team. I would not be surprised if the Sierra logo ended up being slapped on the box.

The GK1 remake project was BEGUN under Activision, wasn't it?  I seem to remember Cesar telling us that POS was given a bunch of resources that had already been created by an internal team, and that they basically continued the project from where Activision's team had left off.

Something like that, I vaguely remember a conversation about it where I was told it went through at least 2 attempts within Activision before it was given to POS.

The new King's Quest is not a point and click adventure.

@Collector and Lambonius

As Josh Mandel said to me in a livestream from Doublefine:

Quote
Back before the Pinkerton Road and LSL:R Kickstarter projects, there was an effort by someone at Activision (a man I used to work before before he went to Activision) to restart some of the Sierra IPs as mobile games.

yes, but Activision is a tough nut to crack. Even with Jane's resume, getting the GK license took *years and years* of wrangling.

Even on the Pinkerton Road farm (in early 2013) Jane didn´t want to say anything about it. But the little pictures of the sneak preview looked like GK. :)

Wah wah...

On the plus side, that probably means they're not doing a Telltale-style game either, since that's what people think "point-and-click" is nowadays.

I suspect that statement was made with the explicit strategic intent of causing a bunch of fan uproar and getting people talking though, so it could totally be bullshit, or not really mean what it sounds like.

Oh well.  If nothing else, this should be an amusing slow-motion train wreck to watch.

"We are making an adventure game just not one that solely uses the mouse"

Actually, that's exactly what I thought when I've read that "The new King's Quest is not a point and click adventure." - and if you thought that it's going to be a 3D-action game or something like that, then you, sirs, are perverts.

I find it hilarious that there was a Twitter backlash over this.  God bless modern technology.

Also, fuck Twitter.

so will it be kinda like grim fandango or more the old mask of eternity only with a better engine!
again that game woulda rocked if it wasnt out that early with engines that were never meant for such a game
great concept  bad execution

I find this awesome not .. sad or upsetting!
