Crystal Shard is proud to announce the release of Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok, available for FREE download!
Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is an adventure / RPG hybrid. Like in many adventure games, you have a world to save, and must use your wit, guile and inventory to puzzle your way through. Like in many roleplaying games, you can customize your character with various classes and skills, and must train yourself in combat to stand a chance against the fierce monsters in your way.
The game is designed in the spirit and atmosphere of the classics, and strives to have the same high quality of art, music, and plot. With multiple character classes and several solutions to many puzzles, the game has excellent replayability.
Features:
- Explore the rich world of Norse mythology!
- Three character classes with separate side quests: use your strength as a warrior, the arcane arts as a sorceress, wit and guile as a rogue, or create a hybrid with skills from multiple classes.
- 32 distinct voice acted characters with animated portraits.
- Over 100 hand-painted backgrounds and 10,000 sprites in animations.
- Many monsters, including giants, trolls, and svartalfar.
- High replayability due to optional quests, alternative solutions, and the three different classes.

Excellent. Loving the art style and backgrounds. Look forward to this one! Well done guys!
-
Looks so beautιful..
Really looking forward to that !
-
Bad ass. Nice job, Fizzii--looking very much forward to this, just like everyone else! :)
-
Awesome! Well done! That looks awesome!
Bt
-
I had to watch it with the sound off, but it looks awesome. Definitely keeping an eye on this one.
-
WOW, blown away! I love the dialogue portrait work, especially Egther.
Intendant S, you should listen when you have a chance; very "fantasy epic", tense strings & deep foreboding horns. Great stuff!
-
Sweeeeeet. This game has definitely been on my top 5 that I'm eagerly looking forward to...
-
I just saw it with sound this morning. It's even more epic and I so look forward to it. I'm following it on Facebook now.
-
See first post for a new video showing some of the characters and voices in HQ :)
-
Really excellent voice work! I can't wait to see the whole game.
Quite remarkable it's going to be free. You'd have to think all that effort and time should be rewarded.
-
Wow. That's some great voice work and art. I can't wait to get my hands on the game.
-
The voices are pretty fantastic...I love the two-headed troll. ;) This game, after QFI of course, is maybe my most anticipated game to be released. Top 5 for sure. If they're doing beta now they must be getting close, right? Altho a game that large would probably take some time to do testing I'd imagine.
-
Love the music! My hat is off!
-
Yeah, this really looks and sounds top notch for a freeware game. I'm a little surprised you guys aren't charging for it. It looks worlds better than ATOTK did.
-
Yes, the project is getting very close. But it'll still be a little wait to iron out all the bugs and get the balancing right.
We do this in our free time as a hobby, and we want it to be free so that anyone can download and enjoy it. It's definitely been a lot of work, and certainly a labor of love for Corby, the art lead.
Plus, who doesn't like Norse mythology? :) I actually learnt quite a bit about Viking myths while working on this!
-

Very true!
-
here here, Norse mythology Rocks
-
I think I saw a Paypal link for donations, and I plan on putting a little something in, at the very least. So much time & effort has obviously gone into it and it looks & sounds really awesome. I love me a female heroine too (good OR evil). I can't pronounce the names of any of the characters or locations but that makes it all the more intriguing... :P
-
You got a link you can post? I'd be tempted to pitch in a few buckazoids, myself.
-
There is a Paypal link at www.crystalshard.net (http://www.crystalshard.net) (plus other games!); and the same button has now also been added to the Heroine's Quest website: http://crystalshard.net/hq.htm (http://crystalshard.net/hq.htm)
Main thing for us is that people enjoy the games we make :)
-
Thanks for posting the link! :)
-
Damn, I was afraid they'd be using PayPal. Oh, well. I'll make sure to spread the word about it, at least. ;)
-
You can now make your own boxes/DVD cases etc for HQ, and just in case you need extra incentive, we're holding a small competition where you can have a cameo sprite in the game :)
Join the Heroine's Quest box contest, and win a cameo in the game!
(1) Download the box art for the game from http://crystalshard.net/dls/hq_boxart.zip (http://crystalshard.net/dls/hq_boxart.zip)
(2) Print one of the box art images, and use it to make a DVD case, CD case, or actual game box for HQ.
(3) Take a picture of it in suitable surroundings. What is fitting is up to you; you could find a snowy landscape to place it in, or cosplay as a troll holding the case, or create some fan art and place the case to the side, or anything else you can think of. Be creative!
(4) Post the picture in the AGS forums in this thread (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=38124). Otherwise, if you have Facebook, please put it in our FB group (http://www.facebook.com/HeroinesQuest), and link to it from your own Facebook timeline or wall.
The deadline is October 16th (23:59 GMT). After that, the Crystal Shard team will act as judges to determine the three best entries. The three winners will get a cameo in the game: describe what your character should look like and we will place it in Heroine's Quest. One cameo is alive and well, one is imprisoned, and the last one is dead (because hey, the game is about Ragnarok). The cameos are not hidden; a player is likely to come across them in a normal playthrough.
The first price gets first pick and an animated cameo; the other two are static. Your character must be suitable to the environment, so e.g. robots or ninjas are not an option; and note that this is
a cameo, not a moving or speaking role. By submitting a picture, you give us permission to use it as promotional material on e.g. our website; we'll include your name if we use it. Crystal Shard retains full rights to the game, including the sprites used for the cameo.
-
What if you wanted to be a robot ninja? :P
Seriously, though, great idea for a contest. Good luck to those who enter.
-
Just in case anyone is interested and may have missed this before - there's less than 3 days left till this ends, so get your photos in before the 16th October in order to have a chance at one of three available cameos in HQ!
-
Damn, my photoshop/dvd skeelz are teh suxxors unfortunately!
Awesome contest but unfortunately I suck as hard as Miley Cyrus at the requirements for it! ;D
-
Getting very excited about this QFG style game! :)
this part sounds really cool (Elder Scrolls like):
"Characters aren't always stationary in the one place, and often move to other locations during the day. You can even follow them from room to room! This brings a lot of life and realism to the cities, and is not commonly seen in adventure games at all!"

-
Yeah, I'm looking forward to Heroine's Quest, too.
-
Sounds more "Lure of the Temptress"-like than "Elder Scrolls"-like, but that makes me look forward to it more.
-
Ah, thanks for posting!
We're getting very close, and feedback from those who have seen the game so far has been very positive. Hopefully will be able to release sometime in the next few coming weeks, but we're definitely aiming for before the end of the year :).
-

Never played Lure of the Temptress, but the thought of characters with jobs walking around doing things definitely reminds me of Oblivion & Skyrim. Hopefully much like with those games the characters leaving the area will allow you to 'borrow' their stuff mwahahaha. ;)
-
That was a fun game, but it certainly had a pretty odd ending. I'd totally love it if someone did a proper remake, it kinda shows its age today.
-
I have been hearing about this one for years wonder when its done?
-
Aiming for before the end of the year :)
-
That would be fantastic still free? or paid now?
-
Still free!
-
Can't wait!

Couple more updates on IndieDB:

Radiant is also planning to be at AdventureX this coming Saturday/Sunday (7th - 8th December), so if you're in London, you will get to meet him if you go.
I think Broomie will definitely get a chance to meet Radiant ;)
-
Ah awesome! I'll look out for him and say hello.
-
I have to ask...
Will there be any nudity in this game? Either topless or bare-bottomed? I mean, she's got some amazing bazoongas so I can't help but ask.
Also, will there be any optional sex encounters in the game?
Thanks! ;D
-
It's not Leisure Suit Larry or QFG4.5!
There is a wash tub in one of the inns the heroine can stay in, but you will see what happens when you try to use it :P
So no, you won't see the heroine nude in the game, and it wouldn't have been right to turn the game into something that objectifies the female protaganist anyway. After all, the male protagonist in QFG never got objectified to my knowledge.
Still you will find there are a couple of things you can do which are more 'adult' - that is, get a drink at the pub, or lose all your money gambling. And there is a character which doesn't have clothes, but she is covered with a censorship bar because the game is PG.

Woooooo!! What a lovely poster as well!
It's strange now. QFG is now not the only game that blends RPG with Adventure anymore. There are so many other inspired games now! For so long fans have been longing for another such title but it never came. Turned out when the time came and people were able, they took action themselves and all of them made spectacular games to compliment the QFG series. :)
-
Awesome! Downloading it now. Finding time to play it, though, is another matter.
-
Sweet! Downloading as we speak. Looking forward to this!
-
Congrats on the release Fizz! Awesome news, you must be relieved to have it out the door :) I just got home from my Christmas trip, looking forward to checking it out!
-
It's pretty great. I particularly like the combat system. It's arcadey, but it works really well and is a lot of fun to play. I just need to build up my stats some more so I don't keep getting my ass handed to me! ;)
-
Is that true that you can't retrieve items stolen from you if you don't find a way into the thieves guild in time? If so, that's pretty frustrating.
Otherwise, enjoying every aspect of the game so far. Great work!
-
Yes, that's a bug that we're fixing in v1.1. You can retrieve your stuff before going to Svartalfheim, but you can still complete the game even without it (in which case, you just need to make sure you don't stuff up too many quests).
V1.1 probably coming end Jan or early Feb, depending on how quickly we can get this build tested to make sure no other bugs got introduced.

Ok, cool. In that case, I'll just wait for the fixed version.
Also some more bugs I've spotted off the top of my head:
o In Svartalfheim smithy - teleporting from the second floor (which is also the ceiling) to the first one using the Blink spell results in game crash.
o Sometimes the game freezes if you ask Lithrasir to get you a drink while she is busy preparing herbs. I wasn't able to replicated this one, though.
o There was a graphical glitch (wrong animation, as far as I remember) when I died because of overexertion while trying to climb into Munarvagir inn window.
-
Thanks. We've got the first two fixed (I need to check that they really are fixed now!). The third one I've reported :)
-

Just checked what the third one is exactly - there is animation of the heroine falling through ice after she collapses, which shouldn't be there.
-
I have been so stump on this since relapse id love a old fashion walkthrough!
-
We don't have an official walkthrough, and currently we're focusing on v1.1. Some players might be putting one together, so we will see :)
There are quite a few Let's Plays on Youtube now; though they are playing blind.
-
I second that about a walkthrough! Please, please, pretty please!! (Does that sound slightly desperate? Cuz I am!) I'm playing as a Rogue (always my class of choice) and there are just SO many puzzles and non-linear aspects to such a long game, that I am constantly getting extremely overwhelmed and feel like I'm always missing quests and puzzles.
I may check out the Youtube playthroughs, but I'm still hoping for a good ol' walkthrough at some point because a) I HATE missing out on stuff; and b) I know I will never finish this game or even come close to it without one.
If anyone's planning to attempt a walkthrough I would gladly pay good buckazoids for it! The game is far too beautiful and intriguing to give up on it.
--The same will go for QFI as well, I'm quite sure of it.
-
I am sure someone will be working on one. Radiant doesn't have time to write walkthroughs (not with all the bug fixing going on, and other projects he intends to work on after this), and I certainly can't write a walkthrough for the rogue as I haven't finished playing it myself :P I am testing it though, to check for any further bugs on top of what was reported.
We deliberately released the game without a walkthrough because we believe it is more rewarding to players to find things and work them out for themselves. It is meant to be hard to get a 500/500 score on your first playthrough; the game rewards players who are extra diligent. It also gives us some indication of whether the puzzles made sense - which they do, given that people have managed to find all the 500 points for most of the classes (one point missing for the rogue) :).
Anyway, if you are patient, I am sure we shall see one at some point.
-
that one point wasn't stolen was it? it would figure that the rogue gets some of their own medicine.
-
Nope, it's there, no one has picked up on it yet, that's all :)
-
Awesome game! Really enjoyed it!
What kind of download numbers has it had so far?
-
IndieDB says 11 900, but we had a mirror up as well, so probably over 12 000 downloads. By comparison, in 2007 when we released ATOTK, it took three months to reach 10 000 downloads.
-
Version 1.1 is now available at http://www.indiedb.com/games/heroines-quest/downloads/. (http://www.indiedb.com/games/heroines-quest/downloads/.)
-------------------------------------------
When Heroine's Quest was released in December, it received many positive reactions. As our game was played by many more people than our internal testing team, some issues came to light. We have worked on fixing these, and as the result, version 1.1 of Heroine's Quest is now available. We hope you enjoy this update, and thank you all for your interest and support!
Unfortunately, saved games from v1.0 cannot be used in v1.1, although your completion records can be copied. You'll have to decide whether to complete your game on v1.0 or start from the beginning in v1.1 (or complete your current class in v1.0 and try a different class in v1.1). However, we recommend that you restart if you've made it to Svartalfheim without reclaiming your items from the thieves, or if you've failed too many of the vouches in Munarvagir as a sorceress. These situations may lead to a dead end in v1.0, but they can no longer occur in v1.1. If you have further questions, please ask.
Changes to gameplay (highlight to read):
The control panel now has a button to redefine the keys used for combat.
The game now includes a setup utility that can be used to select window size and toggle fullscreen mode.
Regin will now give Gram only to a warrior heroine, not to a rogue. However, the sorceress can buy daggers now.
You can no longer enter the thieves' lodge by just entering the house and using the sword; that was never the intended solution.
You can no longer advance to Svartalfheim before dealing with the thieves' lodge, because later events assume that you've done this.
Liff will now pay you for extra pieces of willow bark, and Sigrun will pay for varg hides. However, stealing an item and then selling it back to the same character will no longer work.
Brynhild's and Skrymir's dialog about honor has been changed to clarify that bragging or telling tall tales is not considered dishonorable to a viking.
Use the hotkey 'N' to view the notepad, if you're carrying it.
Hints have been added to several puzzles that people indicated having trouble with.
We've done some rebalancing of the training rates of certain skills, as well as the amount of food and money present in the game.
To prevent dead end situations, certain items cannot be placed in a chest or otherwise abandoned, and certain locations cannot be entered while you're missing crucial items. For the same reason, if you lose Regin's chest you can now retrieve it. Conversely, you can no longer use the figurine to teleport out of certain plot events.
And fixes for every bug reported in this forum, including but not limited to the crystal lock glitch, the rogue's final battle without poison, the game hanging when asking Lithrasir for a drink, Lithrasir not following you to the holt, Aurvandel leaving while you're using the telescope, the crash if you throw too many daggers in the same room, giving the chest to Regin if you already have the quest reward, Sigyn leaving the room too fast, the sorceress not getting points for the mirror image, the 'cheater' death message in the lodge, characters being hidden if you skip visiting the jarl, and Heronus disappearing.
Made cross-class skills more useful (highlight to read)::
Animal Ken: can be used to calm dogs and cats when sneaking around.
Herbalism: increased chance of getting two potions from alchemy, and you now get a scroll that lists all ingredients, and you can steal some of these from other alchemists if needed.
Stealth: increased chance of avoiding random encounters, and you can now capture Heronus with very high skill.
Thievery: warrior and sorceress with this skill can find lockpicks in Thrivaldi's cave, and can join the Lodge with only this skill.
Mead of Poetry can now be used to learn an extra skill.
----------------------------------------------
Soundtrack is also available for download: http://www.indiedb.com/games/heroines-quest/downloads/heroines-quest-soundtrack (http://www.indiedb.com/games/heroines-quest/downloads/heroines-quest-soundtrack)

Guys I gotta be honest, love the game however what concerns me is the amount of hoops I have to go thorough just to get a copy
and am very reluctant to download the new version for this reason can you please consider hosting a more direct link and reach out to the community for mirrors instead of file shearing sites
-
IndieDB is not a "file sharing site." It's a completely reputable website that hosts and reviews games. I got to the download in about 2 clicks by following Fizzii's link above. All you have to do is be signed in (just like registering for the forums) and it will download automatically when you click the download link.
-
But I should have to be signed in and or redirected anywhere there's a difference between registering because you like the community vs doing so to get a trusted link
just my thoughts though
PS if your not signed it it redirects to game front
-
Well you can always not play the game. ;)
-
but what would be the harm in a mirror that doesn't give sign-ins or redirects?
it would be greatly appreciated
-
I guess I just don't understand the aversion to signing in to a reputable website. That's just a simple reality of online life. It's not like you have to install some kind of big Origin-style service on your PC in order to play it; you just have to take one minute of your time to register on the website and sign in. Once you've done that, there are no redirects.
-
Its not as reputable to me as say here or AGDI
you guys are a trusted source for example
even the ags page for HQ redirects to various sites
nothin aginst the developers at crystalshard intended its just the mirror set up
-
Lamb, you do know that IndieDB is a front and by agreeing to their T&Cs you forward all your packets to a third party VPN which is then analyzed by the NSA, but not before your credit card details are sold to Prince Alyusi Islassis of Nigeria? I thought everybody knew that...
-

lol pretty funny there guy but yeah more direct links without sign up would be great
-
There is a mediafire link through here: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1748/ (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1748/)
We can't host files on Crystalshard.net as it doesn't have the bandwidth and is kindly given to us by someone else. If someone wants to put v1.1 onto a mirror site, they're more than welcome to, but we don't have the hosting ourselves to do it.
-
that perfectly understandable I am sure many community members would offer if you asked Hell I would if I thought my website could handle the load just ask

I think you are overstating the problem. Having to register with a website is hardly having to jump through hoops to get a FREE game! To download any commercial game you need to be registered with the site distributing it and still need to part with your cash

I saw that just before, thanks :) The game just got onto Steam, so that helped with the exposure there. I find it a little funny how some people get so hung up on how a protagonist should look (that is, some people want different hair colours and full customization, but it's not actually a simple coding trick like they seem to think it is). Always someone wanting more :P
The Steam page is here:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/283880 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/283880)
It has a bunch of achievements, so enjoy :).
(Turns out Steam has disallowed trading cards because the game is free).
-
What kind of download numbers are you looking at now that you are on Steam?
-
I'm not sure there's a place for me to actually view downloads. Apparently over 6000 people have run the game since going on Steam, and we had 300 odd people playing it at a single time, that I know of.
-
I have written a walkthrough for Heroine's Quest here: http://crystalshard.net/dls/HQguide.pdf (http://crystalshard.net/dls/HQguide.pdf)
This is very spoiler heavy, so we recommend you try to play the game without it first.

Got the most recent issue of PC Gamer magazine this weekend. Crystal Shard's "Heroine's Quest - The Herald Of Ragnarok" was mentioned in the June 2017 / #292 issue (U.S. version).
Located on page 45 under their "The Top 50 Free Downloads" article, it's #19:

Wow, thanks for sharing that :)
