The one line from the narrator that bugged me
« on: July 28, 2014, 03:30:48 PM »
Okay, I don't want to sound like "Dick Cobblepott" (real name withheld) and get on top of some sort of "Male Feminist Crusader" high-horse, but there was one line in the game that seemed needlessly sexist.

As a Sorcerer the game refuses to let you give excess bees to that one beekeeper girl.  It says something like, "Don't give that bee to that bim!  You need it for Prospero!"  It does that even before Prospero tells you he needs it.

The main problem with the line is that the girl in question doesn't exhibit any negative qualities that would qualify her as a bimbo.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bimbo

She seems fairly intelligent, hard-working and down to earth, and doesn't act promiscuously, so it seems unfair that the Narrator insultingly calls her a bim from out of nowhere.

Aww, I don't think it's meant to insult anyone by calling one of the females in the game a bimbo.  To me, it's not offensive, just one of the many little quirks of the game.  It's supposed to be silly and nonsensical at times.   ;)

That's just my opinion though.  I'm a hard one to offend.

he... male ... is in perfect character

but ive seen less taken out of games for less insult

on strongbads game for attractive people, when we held the playtesters group  2 of the girls that playtested came to mark and I and said that strongsad carving on himself with a pencil was offensive as it made fun of suicidal people, so we cut it out of that episode..
was funny imo
(not emo lol)

again this wasnt off-putting to me, and bim is by far.. not a terrible word,
just play some LSL and see far worse (but I suppose at least that game says it will insult larry more than the women IN the games lol)

hope this didnt offend to much,  just think of him as a character, and what roehm would say, vs you would say as roehm :P

Aww, I don't think it's meant to insult anyone by calling one of the females in the game a bimbo.

I agree that it's not meant to insult, especially in a game that gives us wonderful female characters like Voleris and Kayanna.  Some lines just rubbed me the wrong way.  This line, and the one where Roehm says he has the constitution of a little girl stuck out a little for me, but I may just have a higher sensitivity to some lines.  (I've gotten a lot of crap in the past as the only woman in the lab.)

In contrast, Roehm's exchange with Voleris when he complains about being rescued by a woman in a bikini, and her telling him that one day he'll appreciate her ability to rescue him was absolutely fantastic, especially considering the ending!  I also enjoyed their banter in general.  It had just the right amount of sass!

Frankie Boyle is a hero of our people.

As for the topic of the language, we did discuss and review all the lines in the game, being a team of mixed genders and backgrounds, and tried to make sure we weren't being overly offensive while at the same time not stripping all the comedy/quirkiness out of it to be PC.  Always a bit of a delicate balance, and with different people being sensitive to different things, probably impossible to get it 100% right for everyone.  Hopefully any lines that do rub people up the wrong way are few and far between!

I wouldn't worry too much about my complaint, the only way to avoid being remotely offensive to anyone would be to completely sanitize it and turn Roehm into some generic heroism-fanatic.

all complaints as such are normally held with respect bad2dabone!

at least from my experience.
No dev or team wants to offend anyone, minus maybe like al lowe hehe
but again with the amount of bs larry goes through it sorta evens out

did you find the larry games offensive at all?
curious to know

I found it more offensive towards pooor poor larry lolol

but I remember passionate patty getting lots of complaints from female players..

anyway I cant speak for the team here but I can say your input is valid and hope it didnt hurt the game in your view!

here is hoping that ya want to play the NEXT QFI!! muhahaha
the search for the left sock!

LSL didn't really bug me.

The main reason it bugged me wasn't because it was offensive so much as it just seemed out of character to insult the beekeeper girl like that.

Sure, she is very attractive but besides that she completely lacks all the other traits of a bimbo.

interesting!

and yea, while she doesnt have said traits,  doesnt mean the slang cuts off...
again its like the good C word vs the bad, tho in this case in my opinion was just used as a general statement .. like anyone woulda been, not just that bee lady.

coulda been a nun, that woulda been more funny.. lol

dont give that bim another bee!
as its a nun...
nm

anyway see your point dont get me wrong at all, ive worked around enough people to say that I can see how it might offend if one lets it.. but try not to let it get ye' down matey! yar!

hug

we all need hugs, even virtual ones
and here is a hug for the bee keeper lady (hug  *subtle buzzing... AHHH there's bees in my knees look out I cant stop em.) starts a dancing

ahem
