I love Matte Paintings in films. Some of my favorites?
The warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, for one.
I found this really cool site that has a bunch. I'll be posting more, but check this out if you get a sec.

Matte painting is a great concept art device to knock out ideas quickly. When the matte painting itself is being used in the end product however, man that shit has to be high quality, and it's insanely hard to get it just right. Kudos to those who pull it off!

You know, I only just found out the other day that it was a trilogy! Only ever saw the first one, but I hear the rest are gash anyway.

Yeah the others are absolute shit on a stick. Don't bother.

And from a few weeks ago, here's an 18-minute history lesson on the evolution of green screens:

BT, from your link above:
http://nzpetesmatteshot.blogspot.com/search/label/Harrison%20Ellenshaw (http://nzpetesmatteshot.blogspot.com/search/label/Harrison%20Ellenshaw)
Harrison Ellenshaw is the MAN when it comes to matte painting, especially from sci-fi movies -- the Star Wars trilogy, The Black Hole, TRON...
Speaking of which, here's one of my favorite matte paintings, if only for its simplicity and prescience/foresight of the coming domination of computers in the workplace:
The ENCOM cube farm from the beginning of the film, Harrison's one and only matte painting for TRON. I couldn't find a nice shot of it on the Net, so here's a scan from my extremely well-worn copy of The Art Of TRON by Michael Bonifer (1982).

Though only the right half was used on the film, I was happy to see that the posted link above does have a pic of Harrison looking through the matte painting...

And a nice one from Return Of The Jedi:

...although there's so much black in the design scheme of the Death Stars, it's hard to see what's not painted.

Matte paintings are just so amazing.... honestly, a lot of them inspired me in making games like we do.
