Steam Launcher Error
« on: August 25, 2014, 11:28:12 AM »
Hi. I've tried searching the internet and the forum here for any info on this particular error but I haven't had any luck. Sorry if this question's already been addressed!

I bought Quest for Infamy through the Humble Store and I redeemed my Steam key. But when I try to launch the game from Steam I get a pop-up box that says:

Adventure Game Studio

ERROR: Unable to find game data files

And that's all. I hit OK and the game doesn't run. I've tried deleting the local game content and re-downloading it via Steam but I still get the same error. Anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Whoa.  That's odd - Which OS are you using?

Okay - in the local files folder, you should have qfi.exe speech.vox audio.vox winsetup.exe winsetupQFI.exe - make sure those are there, first.

yea id try looking in the folder for sure,

see if they are there 1st and then just make a shortcut and cut steam out of it

if its steam thats the issue, post a ticket to them
ive never seen this issue before  but to play the game you can set the -offline and see if it finds them,
or try disabling cloud, in case its trying to set files that werent apart of steam (my clouds are ALWAYS disabled)

not sure thats the issue here though, but yea check the folder if you need the app id or something to find the folder let the forum know,
try the exe's in the folder if they work without steam launching its bootstrap its steam for shizzle

All the files are in the local folder. Making a QFI.exe shortcut on my desktop works and launches the game just fine. Looks like the error is somehow Steam's fault.

Yeah, that is weird - is your Steam Client upgraded?  You should ask them about that, though... sorry you had troubles!

question:

is steam running when you run the shortcut?

if it is , try NOT  starting steam and see if it runs, without steam open,
if so its a cloud issue

question:
is your steam cloud disabled or enabled?

question:
did you verify files in steam for qfi?

glad at least the shortcut works but it shouldnt as it needs the steam bootstrap to launch, and if steam is open it found the files even if it used the shortcut...
very odd indeed

open a ticket with valve and let me/us know what the answers to some of those questions are!

cheers and happy gamin
(btw let me know if achievements etc dont work due to steam not being ran or not running)
seems it IS or it would have prompted you even running the exe shortcut from the directory..

oh also there is a file

appcache dir

1.Completely exit Steam.
2.Navigate to your Steam installation folder (~C:\Program Files\Steam)
3.Delete the 'appcache' folder.
4.Restart your computer and attempt to launch the game through Steam

try that also, this same thing kinda happened for preorders of tex murphy tesla effect, steam users got pandora directive but it wasnt a steam game at the time, so it would error out saying it didnt exist, just erasing the appcache folder worked

but I still recommend disabling any clouds or cloud saves and do local backups ALWAYS!

I got it working. Thanks for all your help!!

Basically, I checked the folder and made sure all the files were there. Then I opened up a ticket with Steam's support staff. They sent me a link to refresh my steam files. (Here if anybody is interested https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3134-TIAL-4638)

And that did the trick. Quest for Infamy loaded up just fine from Steam.

Thanks again!

i always run ags games from the dir first to setup the game
then once its running the steam library works just fine,
sometimes if you run the steam library first it wigs out sometimes not
not just this game mind you, all ags games,

dont get me started on unity and the endless reboot loop for .net bs
so compared to that this minor bug is cake!
