Banter and Chit-Chat! / Re: The Kickstarter Blues
« on: August 30, 2012, 05:45:52 PM »
I don't really jump to support many of the recent Kickstarters because they don't offer awesome rewards for big donations. Okay, copies of the thing you're making are a given, and T-shirts and collectible toys are nice, but how many of them let you be a part of the magic? I think if more of these groups would let me be part of the team, I'd go broke. Most of the top tier rewards are things like invitations to parties I wouldn't be able to attend anyway, or large props that I don't have room to store.

There is also the factor of how much I've paid so far. It takes something pretty promising to get that much money out of me. In the end, I donate a bit to the Kickstarters of games that interest me, usually just enough to get the game and any rewards that look both interesting and claimable, once it looks like they're going to reach their goal. Or enough to get an Ouya and second controller two hours before the deadline.

Interesting idea... take the trope of "the person you have just rescued is completely insufferable and you think the world might be better off if the rescue is a failure" and assign it to a main character who has the option of deciding to make it so.

The art is amazing. I've seen a few of the art assets, and the depth of discussion that goes into getting them just right. The people on the art team are incredibly talented, and the ideas going into the art are as intricate and detailed as the art itself. I think it's equal parts game concept and artist imagination, which really brings the world and characters to life. You won't be disappointed.

Quest for Infamy / Re: QFI 2?

You've referred to QFI as "your latest project" as though it were somehow my project more than another backer's... was that colloquial or intentional?  I'd love it if folks here randomly began believing I was part of the team  ;)

I was just confused. Regardless, it's something I'd like to do if I ever get the time and the motivation. The problem, like I said, would be slogging through some of the rather terrible fan games to get to the fun ones, and I don't think I can do those when there are still so many good games on my list. I guess I could play through them individually and just skip the bad ones, but then there would be even less reason for me to play through the SQII remake, since again, everyone already knows the story and has seen most of the content in another form.

But I think that's a bit off the topic of a QFI sequel, so I'll leave my own plans intentionally nebulous and just remind everyone to keep your endgame save on a floppy in a place you'll be able to find it. I know where all of my QFG characters are... do you?

As long as the "NIDOKING WAS HERE AND DIDN'T SEE KILROY, THAT LIAR" thread is allowed to remain, I'm perfectly okay with this.

Think of it as QFI promotion... folks may come to IA from your SQII LP series (link conveniently posted with each installment), discover KQIII, enter the forums and start begging for KQ:KoS, just to be told... "Hey!  Excited?  So are we... have you heard about this *new* awesome project, built from much of the same team?  Well... try this demo!  The Paypal is over here..."

Well, I do my Let's Plays for the Something Awful forum, and they probably wouldn't look too kindly if I treated it too much like a marketing venue, but I know I put the link to IA in the credits of the original Space Quest series LP (in which I played the Space Quest for Glory demo as a bonus feature), and I'd certainly post a link in the new thread when I got to SQII VGA. I'd also mention QFI as your latest project and link to the website, but I think I'd have to leave the logical leap of finding the Paypal button and making a donation to the reader's imagination for propriety reasons. I also doubt I'd get to it for a while - I think I'd do the earlier fan games first, because most of them are pretty bad and I want to save the good ones for later. Nothing like following SQII VGA with The Lost Chapter and then The Voyage Home.

EDIT: Oh, I see... you mean they'd see that on the IA forums. Yes, that would work nicely.

(no flame or trolling intended here, just some humor and fun so don't get mad Nidoking. Christ  i don't need to be banned.) :) :D ;)

I don't get mad that easily. However, I also don't intend to try to pass anyone else's ideas off as my own, although like I said, I'm very easily inspired and there's been a lot of creative stuff posted on the forums already. I wouldn't recommend trying to use me as a conduit to get ideas to the development team, but if there are good ideas out there and I think they're worth bringing up, maybe I'll suggest some.

I also don't believe I have the power to ban anyone, not that I'd be likely to use it if I did.

Guess it wasn't so clever in retrospect.  :-\  I blame lack of sleep on my part.  :o

No, no, it was quite clever. I was just making fun of the fact that IA's most recent release was a remake of Space Quest II. Which, incidentally, is the second biggest obstacle to my doing a Let's Play series of Space Quest fangames. There are a bunch of them out there, and some of them are really good, but it wouldn't be complete without the SQII remake, and it might be a bit less interesting for people who watched my LP of the original to see most of the same puzzles again, even though the remake is different in plenty of ways.

The biggest obstacle, of course, is that I'm lazy, which really trumps any other concern if you think about it.

Well sorry, guys. just bcause you throw down 5K you get to see everything?  I guess you get the "perks" with a BIG enough pledge. ;)

Well, that was the stated reward for the $5000 tier. If it makes you feel any better, they haven't set up the producer forum access for me yet, and I only just got BT's Skype info this morning. (No, I won't share, so don't ask.) I actually came up with an interesting idea based on some stuff I've read in the forum, but I'll need time to set up a good pitch for it, and it's getting late.

"Remember how great QFI3 was?  Relive a brand-new, earlier adventure in the prequel QFI2 !!!"

Wait... you mean someone would try to advertise that they've made game number 2 - which was already out there and established - in a series that was already well past that point, both story-wise and technologically? I can't see anybody being interested in a rerelease like that.

Dammit, I was looking forward to shovel horse manure :(

You could just play more Quest for Glory I. They even pay you to do it.

Hmmm. So, if I know anything about how these game series work, the third game will have us traveling through time to visit all of these parts of the world at interesting times throughout their history, becoming a legend even though all we really wanted to do was prevent the evil tentacle from breaking up our parents at the high school battle of the bands, with our trusty floating animal companion that turns into a magical screwdriver.

The export file for that game will, of course, have to be huge to contain every action we took, so we can do it all again in the fourth game with the added challenge of not running into ourselves. By the fifth game, we'll be fighting our way through the series' entire mythology, destroying the revered gods and cementing ourselves as the rulers of the universe. I guess from that point, the only way to proceed would be through prequels.

Well, precisely. And that's why the T&C specifically spell out that no, you get nothing. You lose! Good day, sir! Well, it's sort of a win because your idea went into the game, but it's no longer your idea; it's theirs. Hence, if you want any credit for your idea, keep it hush-hush and arrange with the developers privately. Personally, I love the idea of my input being part of a creative work, but I wouldn't ask for money in return. Heck, in this case, I paid $5000 for the privilege of possibly having some of my ideas used in the game.

Hey, there's an idea for a T&C modification. If you post a gameplay idea on the forums, and it gets used, you owe QFI $5000. That would keep people honest! "Oh, no, that idea in the game is NOTHING like what I suggested! I have no claim to it whatsoever!" Now there's a way to reach your stretch goals!

Love having to take items a long way before you use them, collecting pieces to a puzzle (ie treasure map in MI2) always nice when you need a whole bunch of things for one puzzle like an extension of the beast's head/markus' blood.

I particularly like when items have more than one use in puzzles. Sure, there's more "challenge" in having to find another item to solve that puzzle, but if you've got a knife in your inventory, why not just use it to cut everything that needs cutting? Why not vacuum up five different things at different times? Why throw away an item just because it came in handy? When you get locked inside the cell you just rescued someone from, you'll wish you'd kept the key hidden on your person.
