I finally got down to trying to run the thing. Using the tips you guys gave me, I got a bit further from zero lol. Now it says "Please run this installation under Windows 3.1 or higher." when I try to run SVGAMAX.exe, but that's about it. :/

and this is in dosbox? saying windows 3.1 is required? ehhh?
ill try to find the game later and run it. see what i come up with

Yep that's in dosbox Kaldire.
You don't have to go through all that hassle though, I still have my memories and youtube LPs of it. :P

A few DOS games from the end of the DOS era sometimes had Windows installers and configuration utilities, but were still DOS games. I have encountered this several times when creating some of my installers. If there is not script file to parse out, the easiest thing is to run it on a machine or VM that it will work on and monitor what it does so you can replicate its functions.

Some games from the end of the DOS era had Windows setups, but you had to play the game from DOS. The installers created a PIF shortcut to the game that would exit Windows and boot to DOS to start the game. If the game itself is a DOS game it can be played from DOSBox, but if the installer or setup is for Win, you will have to manually set it up to do so.

so yea end of the dos solo era  games running in windows early vers were running on dos in reality

but dosbox, will pick this up no need for pif, but shrug

did you still need help getting that game to run? what ver or source are you using?

as collector said sometimes dosbox just needs to be pointed in the right direction, as we all used to call it
Dumb Operating System  dos.. lol

heya

so i got the game to work!

sadly this is ONE of those games that klytos method wont work

as it requires a CD

so what i did, i just used a fresh config (no edits) dosbox .74  if you have a config edited just go to app local and find the config and erase or cut and paste somewhere else

then open dosbox

i mounted my c drive to d

so c= my os
e:= the cd for the game from DT mounted
mount c d:\

then i type d:\
d:\mount e e:\ -t cdrom
then
e:\

e:\ install
let it install, pick a directory
the game installs,
takes a bit,

then it will set you to the path u installed timegate to and will tell you TYPE TIMEGATE to play

type that in, and then it will run a setup, which u just click on the sound, midi and test to make sure it works

tadaaa

works just fine just you have to have the cd mounted..
tis the issue

and just using the exe and dragging it to the dosbox wont allocate mounting of cd drives
so thats how i did it.. manually..

game ran a bit slow so i upped the cpu but you can mess with that after you find out if it runs as directed in my above steps!

gl and let me know!

That was not directed at you, Kaldire. I was responding to DosboxLetsPlay, who asked for clarification.

And only Win 3x and earlier were running out of DOS. 9x only used DOS as a bootstrap for loading Windows. The NT line has always been completely independent of DOS.

win 95/98 runs on dos mate..
lol

As I said, 9x used DOS to bootstrap the OS. It did not run out of it.
Quote from: MSDN
MS-DOS served two purposes in Windows 95.
  • It served as the boot loader.
  • It acted as the 16-bit legacy device driver layer.

runs on dos= bootstrap, saying runs ON it.. meant bootin' to me or it would be just PURE DOS aww i miss PC-DOS hehe,
but yea.. nm its a requirement,
now its just a tool so to speak..

sigh
anyway, I know my old school, seems you do too.

case n point, how do I get all the games to work that are old? I know my stuff..

and yep not arguing with ya, technically though NT had dos as a bootstrap too if you want to get critical
only up until what was it the terrible ME
now well lets just say things are far more complicated yet simple,
i cant even run legacy mode on bios or it wont read all my huge hds haha
but thats another story

but no need to link for me, but thats nice info for others!

Heya!

Sorry for not responding earlier. Well, I've definently made some improvements. I have to ask though, where did you get your version of Timegate (I have the original cd so it's cool to pirate it :P)? So anywho, I fired up the install thingamagigy and it went pretty well but then when I actually tried to install it, it said that it couldn't locate the CD-ROM. So yeah.... another wall :S And that's why I was wondering where you got it from so there would be a better chance of getting it to work.

PS - Sorry guys, I know this topic is kinda dragging on. If it's bothering someone, I could move on to private messaging and only bother Kaldire. :D
