I resent what social media has done to the forums. The likes of Facebook and Twitter do not lend themselves to much more than drive by quips. SHP still has spurts of activity, but who knows down the road.

As far as the nature of any given board, much depends on the management of the board. I view SHP's forum as belonging to the SHP community as opposed to my personal fiefdom. It is all of the regulars that form the character. The only rules are that posters be civil and that tech support questions be asked in the appropriate subforum to make it easier to search for answers. No arbitrary rules about posting subjects, thread drift, etc.

Outside of bots, I have only ever had to ban one account, who was someone who had joined with the sole purpose to attack one of the SHP members.

Also, the place in the world that is the closest to Elizabethan English is in the Shenandoah Valley, VA. But then a linguistical phenomena is for language to change faster in the motherland than in its colonies. Even British English has changed more than US or Australian in the past half century or so. This is evident if you listen to older recordings. Language is a mercurial thing.

We have/had plenty of regional differences here, too, but when commercial radio began there was a consensus to us a standardize pronunciation. Because it was deemed the most readily understandable across all regions, Ohio Midwestern was chosen. This has had a bit of an homogenizing effect. Also, given how transient we have become since WWII.

You rang? You had to know that this would catch my attention.

You can see the SCI0 VIEW editor here http://sciprogramming.com/community/index.php/topic,288.msg1315.html#msg1315

BTW, lance.ewing in that thread is the same one that created PicEdit for making AGI picture resources. He also ported it to Java a couple of years ago.

I also have some scans that I made from the Official Book of King's Quest that has some screenshots from their Pic editor. If I can find them, I'll post them.

Banter and Chit-Chat! / Betrayed Alliance Released
« on: December 24, 2013, 04:48:51 PM »
Doan has finally released Betrayed Alliance. This QfG style game is one of the most impressive SCI fan games I have seen. You can download it from its Wiki page here:

http://sciwiki.sierrahelp.com/index.php?title=Betrayed_Alliance

It is a bit of a hefty download since it uses sciAudio for high quality digital audio.

What?  No love for Casablanca?

There's a reason why Everyone Comes to Rick's...

I am shocked, shocked I tell you!

I have grown to appreciate Casablanca more over time. It is easy to dismiss it as a warhorse, but warhorses usually get to be so for good reason.

Ahem... READ To Kill A Mockingbird.

Bt

Of course, but as good as the book is, the movie is one that I especially like, so it is what first came to mind. By the way, Harper Lee was completely involved in the making of the movie and thought that it was a great portrayal of her book. She had modeled Atticus after her own father. She was amazed with how much Gregory Peck reminded her of her father.

While obviously there is content in the novel omitted from the movie, it is not just another example of a mediocre movie made from a great book.

Oy, yeah - Fanny pack is a noun in American English.... and a, gulp, verb in British English!

Now I have to clean the mouthful of coffee I had not yet swallowed off of my monitor after reading that.

If Vivendi wasn't so moronic and didn't throw out everything Sierra did then it wouldn't have been an issue. Game sources need to be preserved. It's too bad nobody had the foresight for this (or a single care) back in the day.

Welcome to the modern corporate mind. Obsess over the quarterly profit margin, even if you have to mortgage the future viability of the company to do it. There is no tomorrow.

The expanded interface is because of customer feedback. They had people complain that they wanted to open something instead of taking it, etc. The result was the monstrosity used in GK1. It really adds nothing and is a real pain for those who switch between actions via the right click. Having to click several times just to get back to the previous one used is a bit much. Lamb is right, if it actually added something, perhaps it might be worth it, but it didn't.
