Banter and Chit-Chat! / Re: Best free games to play online?
« on: April 19, 2015, 10:11:16 PM »
That's a great link, thanks!

Though, I consider it "legal pirating," games in legal gray zone.  How does that work?  Basically there's games so old that it's not worth it for whoever own the IP to enforce copyrights on something there's littler monetary demand for these days?

I already mentioned it above. It works the same way you can read a book in a library without buying it. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use

I.e. it's a legal application of the copyright law. Of course if you can buy some of those games - you can own the purchase. Internet Archive doesn't give an option to download them, they are only playable while you are on the site. So it's not the same as Abandonia and the like, which are indeed questionable.

That hasn't been taken down yet?

I'm sure DRM lobby like ESA and Co. doesn't like it, but so far fair use still applies to libraries (which Internet Archive is). So they can't so easily take it down. And since the site only offers to play those games there without downloading, it fits into what's permitted for libraries.

The DRM lobby tries to undermine fair use of course. A recent example:

Great! I hope they'll appear on GOG too :) Are you going to develop those on your own or you plan some crowdfunding?

Bethesda? Nah, why would you want to work in such legacy publisher company? The last good game they made was Morrowind ;)

An interesting project by creators of the original Ulitma Underworld:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/othersidegames/underworld-ascendant/

They are still short of their base goal. But they promised to include Linux release in it, so I backed them already :) And it's going to be DRM-free. If you like it - spread the word, I hope they'll reach some stretch goals too!

Is Linux release of 1.1 coming to GOG as well?

Yep! Our guy is packaging it up and sending it off to them soon!

Thanks!

It requires a bit of technical know-how (like compiling), but the Windows 1.1 Humble files run perfectly with the AGS Linux runtime.

Yeah, I figured :) That's exactly how I play the Heroine's Quest on Linux for example (compiling AGS and using their Windows release data), since they don't have an official Linux release. ;) Still it's good to know that the update is coming to GOG soon.

I practically don't use any adventure games forums besides this one. I use a few RPG forums however which have threads about adventure games (as well as GOG forums), and I find them interesting and never really encountered any trolling in them (threads). May be I was lucky?-) I guess it depends a lot on the actual forum, but usually I'd expect RPGs and adventure games to attract people who value storytelling in games so it's kind of surprising that some adventure games forums have so many trolls.

Facebook? Nah, I don't even have an account there. Diaspora* is way more interesting.

Thanks for reminding, I was actually planning to get Arx Fatalis on GOG and try it with Arx Libertatis.

A major sale on GOG now by the way, don't stretch your wallets ;)

I own the retail games, they dont work(most of them as I am on win7 64 bit)

For me, if it's a Windows game that works in Wine on Linux - it works (Bloodlines for instance is working pretty well in Wine: https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=4949 ). If it doesn't - I skip it ;)

Interestingly, some old games tend to work in Wine better than in Windows 8 where they just don't run at all ;D

For older games like Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines or the Neverhood one can still get disks on Ebay (can be pricey though). I wish they would make it to GOG (recently there was quite a breakthrough deal with Disney / LucasArts, so I don't rule out other classics like Bloodlines from Activision or Neverhood from EA).

And for new ones - I just skip them if they are Steam only. Developers don't want to give users a choice and only offer their game through a DRMed service? Then I'm not interested, I prefer to vote with my wallet and support developers / distributors who offer DRM-free games.

About Valve - while I quite dislike Steam with its DRM and attempt to lock-in developers into distribution through them only with their services like Steamworks (i.e. when developers make their games depend on that), on the other hand they were quite a significant help lately in boosting Linux gaming, and I'm quite grateful to them for that. They should get credit where it's due, and criticism for the bad stuff they do.

@Kaldire : I guess some people (like me or Lambonius) had no idea what bg in this context is, until you explained it :) I'm not using Steam (preferring DRM-free distributors like GOG).
