Title: Quest for Glory related fan projects
Post by: Blake00 on March 23, 2013, 08:29:33 AM
Hey guys! :)

Figured now that the old IA forums are slowing down now that people have moved here I should probably move my list here too as along with our old fans there are new ones here too, and new fans bring new information!

For details on what and why I made this the old thread is over at IA here (http://www.infamous-adventures.com/forum/index.php?topic=3601.0), but basically I created a Quest for Glory section on my website paying tribute to the original QFG games and the great many successful and unsuccessful QFG related fan projects out there to make sure that we never forget them and that talented QFG fans are inspired to create new QFG projects in the future. To do this I created a list on the website and collected pics, vids, demos, and information for as many of them as possible.

This is my latest summary of the website list below.

Website:
http://blakessanctum.x10.mx/Games/QFGSeries/ (http://blakessanctum.x10.mx/Games/QFGSeries/)
(Note: Originally built in 2001 this website is still deliberately very late 90s early 2000s retro in design. So if you're not nostalgic for old retro websites with music, animating gifs & left click browsing then you probably won't like it)

Does Hero-U really count as a QFG style game, considering everything we've heard about it suggests it will neither look nor play like a QFG game?
Title: Re: Quest for Glory fan projects
Post by: s_d on March 23, 2013, 03:50:34 PM
Well, Lamb, I'm not sure that's the right question.  Is this a list of "QFG style games", or a list of "QFG related projects"?

It appears that Blake00 has labeled it the latter, where the the answer is clear.  Do all the other projects in the list look or play like QFG?

This is, of course, also ignoring Dragon Fire, which was obviously very different (a number of ARPG's might be argued to be QFGV-like, but that's completely beside the point).

Yeah I thought for a while about whether to add Hero-U or not. Hell I think I deleted it and put it back in the list a couple of times lol. In the end I decided to put it there as it's being created by the Coles, and while not set in the QFG universe exactly it appears they plan to use a names and locations from QFG and no doubt there will be many easter eggs, jokes and gameplay influences relating to their QFG games so I deemed it a QFG loosely related project.

Plus lets face it, there's still old QFG fans out there living under rocks that don't know about the Cole's returning to make RPGs so its good to get the word out in each forum my list exists at. :)

Man, that list brings back memories!  Struggle for Life and Honor, Nightfall...

These were all projects back in the good old days, man.  Real memories back there.  Kind of fun that we're still around.  I wish a lot of them got finished.

Blake, I love your site and I love your work on tracking down all these.  You really took time and effort to do it, and it means a lot to some people - like myself.

the grim quest links get diverted to other sites, at least one of the potentially harmful type.

Thanks BT :)

Took a few months to originally make in 2010 as I spent days on end digging through web archive sites at old project pages. What was good about those old days was that you all supported each other in that all the project pages had links lists to other projects so every new project I discovered lead to others I didn't know about, the list just got bigger and bigger! Being a massive QFG fan I'd get so excited when I'd find a project I didn't know about and a demo to try out, and yeah I wish a lot of these projects got finished too. Sadly web archive doesn't always back up pictures and rarely backs up downloads and videos so a lot of good stuff is still lost to this day. :(

Myrddin: Oh dear I'll have to do something about that, looks like he took his site down after not getting much interest in his multiplayer QFG idea and something else unplesant has moved in. Annoyingly the webring uploader isn't working today so I'll have to fix it later!

Brand new section mate, I created it just under a month ago. Been wanting to make a big page for years on the series, partly just for myself so I could listen to the music whenever I wanted haha. Like with QFG please let me know if you come across any good fan projects, their community has really slowed down in the last few years which is a bit sad. The Starflight 3 project was their big 'Hero6' of the fan projects with massive hopes, big expectations, and multiple collapses. :( But unlike Hero6 its back to life again. Hope they get there!

I keep loosing track of that one. hope it gets done soon.

back on hero6 I tried running the 96 version but it seems to be missing a DLL file

I assume you mean the 2006 MAD engine version. Hmmm can't remember as it was ages ago that I installed it. Knowing me I probably just googled the dll name and downloaded it.

I've had a look in my game folder and there's 2 dll's in there that aren't in the original installer zip:

alleg42.dll
Which you can get from here (http://dll-files.org/public/www_dll-files_org_alleg42.dll.zip)

msvcr71.dll
Which you can get from here (http://www.dll-files.com/msvcr71.zip?0WIgQFaLhQ)

Extract both the dll's into your hero6 folder and see if the game runs then.

Thanks for letting me know, I'll have to update my page with this info!

the second link has expired, but I've tried the first and it works, so does the game at least until it crashes after the character creation screen
Title: Re: Quest for Glory fan projects
Post by: Blake00 on March 29, 2013, 12:15:30 AM
lol and right below where it says expired it gives you a link to refresh and get the file.

Still if the game started up and crashed there may be other issues (but get the 2nd file just in case its that). I had a lot of troubles running it in Win7 but fortunately I had a WinXP virtual machine that it worked quite nicely in, but still not perfectly lol. In fact my 2 playthrough videos on youtube are actually stitched together from many videos recorded between crashes and bugs lol! The MAD engine version is very old and very unstable, but very cool if you can get it working.

got it this time, I'll try again.  I did eventually manage to get a bit further, but the game keeps crashing and there doesn't seem to be a way to save your progress even though there is a way to restore it.  there is a way to try again, not much good though if you've lost your progress.

shame it looks good, what I can see of it anyway - though fighting seems almost impossible.

Thanks for pointing it out

Hit escape to bring up a menu of buttons that if you hold the mouse over it will tell you what each do, one of them is 'Save' which allows you to save in about 5 different slots. Can be buggy sometimes but it does work.

And yeah most of the time you lose battles (making it feel extra special when you do win lol) but fortunately they made you invulnerable anyway hehe.

The worst bug for me in Win7 was where the mouse cursor would become super slow in all chat menus, didn't seem to happen when I played it in my WinXP VM though thank goodness otherwise making all those videos would have been a nightmare lol.

PS Have updated my Hero6 page with those DLLs incase others wish to try the demo. Sadly GrimQuest was not backed up on the internet archive so its gonna take some time I don't have atm digging out some replacements for those dead links as I know he had some threads in various forums that would still be around. I also have a copy of his alpha demo that worked without needing a connection to his server. However I'm not sure where I could stick it online.. maybe rapidshare or something hmm..

Hey guys I could use some advice. I'm stuck in a bit a situation and it’s dawned on me that there are some very talented webpage coders here who are fans of my site who could help me!

To play all the music on my site I've always just used the old embedding technique that I was taught back in the day to play my midis and mp3s. This has always caused the issue that the site required people to have quicktime installed to play the midis. I've always wanted to make the music more accessible to all and so I was thrilled 4 or 5 years back when they brought out the whole html5 audio tags however I quickly discovered they don't support midi which 3/4 of the music on my site is (being mainly a retro gaming fan site).

Every year I try to find a solution eg checking if html5 has added support for midi (which I’m guessing it never will), is there better code, or a freely available java web based player that plays midis but I never find anything that works or is easy to understand. I knew the day was coming that this problem would get bigger and sadly it looks like today is that day! Quicktime have just updated to 7.4.4 and in that update their midi playing support appears to have become broken. As a result any page on my website that has a midi (which is most) crashes the quicktime plugin and quicktime being its usual awesome self takes the bloody browser with it (jams up a bit later forcing you to restart it). So now I have a website that crashes peoples computers, not cool.

When I posted about the problem on the quicktime support forums I just got burned by quicktime ass lickers refusing to admit this is a result of a bug in the new version and would simply rather pay me out for using old code and not offer a better alternative. So I figured I’d come here!

Is there newer better code that I could use that supports midi and hopefully won’t crash quicktime? Or is there another alternative to play the midis on the website without quicktime that gives me player controls (so visitors can stop the music if they want, like it is now)? Or am I going to have to accept that fact that I’m going to need to convert the midis to mp3 and if so do you guys know a good way I could go about it (eg keeping the file size small without ruining the quality of the midi too much)?

I should point out that I only know basic html from a course I did 12 years ago lol, anything advanced on my site is taken from guide sites for html or java tricks. So you’ll need to dumb down your answers a bit for me lol!
Here's an example of my old code from my main QFG page (that puts the player controls over in the top right of the page):
<div align="right">
<embed src="QFG1GM3.MID" autostart="true" loop="false" height="20" width="150">
</div>

MIDI is dying, as you seem to have realized. You cannot select the MIDI device on Win7 without a registry edit or third party software. From what I have heard it is harder or even impossible on Win8. Additionally, many have poor MIDI hardware on their machines.

One obvious solution would be to simply make recordings of the MIDIs. For the pre-GM games you could use the MUNT QT app to play the MIDIs on for recording for Roland sound. You can get the SysEx files for Quest Studios. to do this. For the GM tracks, If you do not have a EMU capable sound card, there are applications to load decent SoundFonts.

This is what I did for SHP, though I am using flash instead of HTML5. At some point I should probably convert everything to OGG and do HTML5. I have not seen any statistics, but I would imagine that enough people are now using HTML5 capable browsers to warrant moving to to it.

lol that conversion sounds joyfully complicated. At least in QFG's case there are websites with many of the midis already converted to mp3/ogg's etc.. its the other games I'm gonna need to figure out the converting.

Also is there options for player controls when using html5 audio tags? When I experimented with them a few years back it just played the mp3 in the background. Not everyone loves music blaring when they load a page lol so I'd like to give them the option to stop it playing like they can with embedded controls.

You could try a MP3 widget? I've never dealt with these before but if it's one MP3 per page (ie QFG4 theme mp3 on QFG4 page) it looks quite straight forward. If it's a playlist or you want a choice of every song I'm sure there are some here that can help with that. I'm at work at the moment so can't really look into this but this site looks a good place to start.

No conversion needed. Just record it while playing the MIDI. In the case of QfG2, play it through MUNT to record it.

I have not really done anything in HTML5 yet, but Wikimedia uses HTML5 and it has controls. The parts of YouTube that are HTML5 do as well. BTW, autostart for sound on web pages is usually considered a no-no.

Thanks guys. In the end I went with the widget style flash mp3 player that had good customisable colour options allowing me to change its look to the theme of each page. Being flash it obviously won't work on a lot of mobile phones but neither did the quicktime midis so nothing's changed there haha. One day I'll find something easy that works on everything lol!

A mate sent me a really good midi to mp3 converter website (http://solmire.com/) that I used to convert all my midis to mp3s making them all actually sound considerably better than they did. Although due to me trying to minimise the space taken (4k midis became 3mb mp3s grr) I had to compress them down to pretty much the lowest quality mp3s you can do which sucks but oh well. At least now everyone with a PC will get the music.

Oh and I know autoplay is considered a no no. I guess I've always ignored that rule on my site because its a small low traffic site and I find music so important in creating that immersion factor that makes you feel like your almost back in the game when you visit the page. I haven't received any angry complaints yet over the years so I guess people 'get' what I try to achieve haha. I always make sure I have visible player controls to allow people to stop the music if they are annoyed.

Does Hero-U really count as a QFG style game, considering everything we've heard about it suggests it will neither look nor play like a QFG game?

urm what have you all seen lambo, s_d and blake?

Ive talked to the team a bit in its early stages, and I can safely say that QFI doesnt resemble much of QFG if you want to get down to it..
does it have some things, yep
same as heroines quest, that was again to me more QFG status than QFI, and most seem to agree in this manner, though i still prefer QFI.

But im kinda lost how you could say that just because of a games looks, and that its not in the same style as yours, or others, that its not a QFG slotted style game!

that shocks me, quite a bit.
esp since they are the original creators of heros quest.
but im not sure if you are beta testing it or something and its just so out to left field that its more like loom or something
As far as i see its a QFG slotted game to be sure.It belongs on that list, and if it doesn't belong on the list QFI doesn't :(
So it does!
Again unless I'm missing something, and I feel I am. This is not an attack against QFI! Just curious now what makes 3 awesome people suggest Hero-U shouldnt be on that list!

Confusion sets in.
Lemme or us know if you know something we don't about that hero-u
they even have MEEPS which well, just having that alone makes it qfg slotted.

And blake00 awesome!
Just ty for the works and hosts etc, and putting the lists together, man o man Ive never seen a series with so many off-slings "mmmmhmmm I liked fried taters mmmhmmm"
off-slings.. to slingblade ahem nm

Hero-U isn't an adventure game, it's an RPG. That's the way it was sold in their KS, so if that's the case, it's not like QFG regardless of whether the original authors have created it.

urmm..well

I do remember a convo on here with BT and you and a few others stating that QFI was AN RPG game.
But I see what is going on after a quick look at the forums.
They are using the unity engine? for .. ahhh noo

It was sold as an advent RPG as your game and all the other qfg series is sold klytos
but looking at some screens and posts just now, it looks more like. DIABLOW 1 or 2
ick...

so yea, uhh

but dont use the "its an RPG not an adventure" as this discussion was made by BT that yes indeed QFI is an RPG.

From bossman
Re: What is your favorite rpg series? (http://www.infamous-quests.com/forum/index.php?topic=1579.msg23924#msg23924)  « Reply #9 on: October 19, 2014, 06:56:40 AM »

"Having programmed on QFI, I can definitely say that QFG does count as an RPG.  YEP."
Bt-

BUT after reviewing screens and posts... just wow they went in the wrong direction.
Corey even said they should have dumped UNITY and went ags
(which they should have)

ick ick ick

either way klytos mate, saying its an RPG and therefore not like QFG, kinda sounds as nuts as most of my posts!

as oh, MOST of the QFG spinoffs I have played are RPG dominate adventure games (but if you are saying that there is no adventure in an rpg again I'm lost) esp after that long thread about how QFI was indeed more RPG than advent. And how one cant really have one without the other.
BUT if this is really more like hack n slash rpg, then yes ick..

And this must be pretty, hard to swallow seeing how your fav game is hero's quest!
man what a let down from them.
AGS FTW!
hehe
(btw it was not sold as a pure RPG on KS, sorry on that one. I know, I backed it.. nothing major but it was slated to be like ultima classics mixed with adventure games

thats how corey explained it anyway

I said QFI was a role playing adventure game.  Which it is.  It has RPG elements and adventure game elements.

Also, did you notice that Lambo's quote you used is a few months shy of two years old?

Yeah I'm not sure why that weird old issue has come back to life lol. Nor am I sure how RPG vs adventure has anything to with inclusion and exclusion. It could a bloody flight sim for all I care, if you're flying over Speilburg & people are shooting arrows up at you then congrats you've made my list lol.

I put games of any type in the list that are related to or significantly influenced/inspired by QFG. That can apply to graphics and/or gameplay. Hero-U most definitely fits that definition. It just happened to be the Coles themselves that were inspired to make a game this time, instead of fans haha. Hell just play the Hero-U demo and it feels and looks like a scene straight out of QFG1 thief mode. I suspect we will lose count of the amount of 'hat tipping' and tributes to QFG stories, graphics, and locations in the final product despite the game being set in a different universe/world. And most importantly there are still too many QFG fans out there who don't even know the Coles are making a new game, I intend to help fix that!
Title: Re: Quest for Glory fan projects
Post by: Klytos on November 16, 2014, 08:57:57 AM
Not disrespecting the game, I honestly don't think it's going to be anything like QFG (and I don't think the demo feels like a QFG game either - the "Sierra" humour is there but that's about it) and Corey was quite clear at the start of the KS that it wasn't an adventure game. It's a dungeon crawler / RPG from what I can tell, and that in itself should be fun, but I think QFG is defined by being an adventure/RPG. Does that matter for your website? HELL NO!

Yea after a bit of research again it seems to be half arsed what corey said it would be

but please try not to bash everything I post people, someone else says the same thing and well it seems to go over.

@Kaldire (http://www.infamous-quests.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=477)
Don't worry mate, we all have our own view on the matter that can be different from other views.

(maybe not here but) As I've said it before, you can't compare QFI and Hero-U to the original QFG. QFI wins this fight without a doubt, but that's because Hero-U isn't completed yet. We can do the whole "which one is more like QFG" topic later when Hero-U comes out too. What can be said though is, that Infamous Quests had its' vision planned and they knew what they wanted to do AND knew that the fans would also love it. As for Hero-U (and this is my own opinion), I get the feeling that they weren't quite sure what they wanted to do. If you know what they originally planned with Hero-U, you'd know that it's completely different from what it is right now and what the fans were hoping for back then. That caused a sort of a "development-hell" in the very early stages of the game creation. They had to change their planned vision and recreate the whole thing. I won't go into more in-depth details because you can read more about the various changes made from the start of Kickstarter to now from Hero-U.net yourself.

And yes, as Klytos said it and as the Coles themselves said it, Hero-U will be more of an RPG than an adventure game compared to QFG that was the opposite. I think if anyone was expecting a classic QFG from Hero-U, they were stuck in an Erana's dream (the good ones at the start before they got bad).

There, I think this should take some of that "bashing" off of you Kaldire. :P

Who's bashing? I enjoy arguing all things Sierra. Especially when I'm right and everyone else's view is wrong.

Hell folks, what i wanted was another Hero's Quest type game!  However due to I.P. rights and all that, we will get a rpg instead of an adventure game.  That's been made quite clear by the Coles' themselves.  So i am humble in the waiting, for their new game.  :)

sigh
again, as even BT said, QFG IS an rpg

I think what you mean is pure RPG hack n slash

and as corey told me it was going to be sorta like a mix of QFG and ultima
but it seems to be a mix of just diablow n bs craaaaaaaap

but pleeeeeease stop saying RPG.. again most adventure games ARE RPGS most..
anything with stats.. and technically anything you play a role in qualifies as RPG

so even plat-formers where u are a lego superman you are role playing superman..
sigh

but yea... im no longer waiting for this release after seeing it will be just like a diablow and ive never ever liked those kind of games. ever.. just mindless stuff.. as klytos said how are you going to add humor?
almost mission impossible

QFG is a hybrid. It's not JUST an RPG, it's an RPG / Adventure. It's that distinction that BT made.

The reason adventure games like King's Quest, Monkey Island or Space Quest aren't RPG's is that the protagonist isn't you, it's Graham, Guybrush or Roger and you direct them. A game like QFG makes you the character instead of you just controlling the character.

not disagreing with you at all
just saying not to leave out PURE rpg, vs just RPG
oh and very GOOD point about creation of the character!
still its not the only thing that defines RPG. as some rpgs IE, planescape torment, pre makes the char for you. And you have no choice in the class but its still one of the most fun and funny rpgs of its era (http://infamous-quests.com/forum/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)
same with anachronox its an rpg, but you dont create your char, or arx fatalis perfect example of pure rpg
or how about vampire? its pure also!

saying a game is an rpg could be anygame you play a role

is bioshock an rpg or fps?
etc

its both

point is its mainly FPS with RPG elements
as QFG is Advent with RPG elements

hero-u seems to just be PURE RPG as we used to call it back in da day..
no hybrid just like you said hack n slash.
to me even diablow isnt RPG, its dungeon crawler aka platfromer with rpg elements

I only use the BT quote to point out he said QFG is RPG status,  hybrid/mix or not  still is rpg
https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/63833-actionadventure-or-rpg-whats-the-difference/ (https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/63833-actionadventure-or-rpg-whats-the-difference/)
someone in the above forum even says he defines PURE RPG .. in this way or that..
I adore the PURE RPGS but they are rare these days.

Totally agree QFG is ADVENT FIRST, and RPG 2nd.
and sorry I dont need to play hero-u to know QFI is going to smear it across the planet hehe
but then again that comparing apples to oranges at this point.

Corey did message me after I sent him a mail, about the Ultima type game, which was one of the true rpgs of the era of yore
ahh ultima 7  and 6  (cheat code for that was awesome SPAM SPAM SPAM) to iago (http://infamous-quests.com/forum/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)
I still know how to read gargish btw.. useless skill but funny XD

Quest For Infamy is a "Role Playing Adventure Game".  I've written this specific title many times.  I also find that people get pedantic about classification and sub-genres, which can get annoying, but it's just how some people get on.

In the end, it IS a game and it's sub-classification is going to be up to who ever plays it.  However, if you're expecting a QFG-like game, it won't be that.

yep yep

Hence the term PURE RPG
vs advent rpg  or hybrid etc

:)

i can name so many rpgs that dont have character creation etc but are die hard rpgs
also vice versa

anyway seems again hero-u will be a diablow ish style  ick

glad I backed the right game here!
muhahaha

Even "PURE RPG" is a subjective term.  There's very few standards as to what constitutes a role-playing game.

I think almost everything is subjective :P
but ya know what I mean

you dont have to make a character for it to be an RPG,

again case and point is Vampire, Planescape, etc

but I totally agree, with you but not so much with klytos saying that one has to create a character for a game to be an RPG.

look at lands of lore, etc
:)

almost everything is relative and subjective this much is totttally true

Hey guys!
