Remakes and "demakes"
« on: August 15, 2020, 11:36:55 AM »
I'm starting this topic because, having no account, I can't comment anything on Facebook.
I really liked the KQ4 VGA screenshot posted, so I wanted to express my opinion. In case you would actually remake the game, small changes in puzzles could be a really good idea. Particularly: I hate the troll cave. The troll appearing randomly is just annoying - all that worst aspect of Sierra games - and the board over chasm puzzle is horrible. It would be much better if the puzzle was not just about random clicking, but about introducing a slightly different solution that would allow Rosella to actually know where she had dropped the board. Something I just though about: a fluorescent fungus, for example? Used to mark the ends of the board so that Rosella can see them? And, perhaps, in order not to make it too easy - still a requirement to click very carefully between these two spots? Just my quick thought.
I also really liked the "beam me" Easter egg and I regret that it's only found in the AGI version. In fact, it was THE factor which encouraged me to play the AGI version as well.
Other "remakeable" games... and I'm not pushing anyone to do it, I realise that it's hard, just expressing my ideas in case anyone decides to actually do it. I dislike two particular aspect of "The Colonel's Bequest": illogicalities about finding the body (particularly the moment when Laura stumbles upon drunk Ethel, leaving the garden... and possibly just the next moment finds her body in the garden.
I didn't really like how the passage of time in "Dagger of Amon-Ra" is closer to real time - it's possible to miss some things, it prevents the player from looking carefully at everything... But the passage of time in "The Colonel's Bequest" is not perfect either, one 15-minute interval can take seconds and another more than 15 minutes...
And I hate Laura's notebook for its extremely artificial language. "Religious item found" - who would have written something like this?! If Laura just wrote "There's an old Bible hidden under the chapel floor" - it would have had the same effect: confirming that Laura has found it and has a chance at becoming a Super Sleuth.

A little note on "demakes": I don't like this name because I firmly represent the opinion that hand-painted VGA is just much more beautiful than 3D, so 3D to VGA is an improvement. Or than photographic art. I don't know how scary are parts 2 and 3 of "Gabriel Knight" (part 1 is still acceptable for me, but I was for example really scared when playing "The Last Door" series and only played it at daytime... the plot just drew me in nevertheless), but I never played them first of all because of their ugly graphics.
(I, anyway, also don't like some aspects of GK1, particularly: wouldn't it have been much more natural to have Gabriel speak German - and still have it represented as English? Particularly since the German version of the chapel poem doesn't fully rhyme... Don't tell me that there are no Americans who speak foreign languages!)
The same goes, particularly, for two non-Sierra games: parts 3 and 4 of "Broken Sword". And these games really have great plot ideas, but still parts 3 and 4 are horribly ugly.
My list of games I would most gladly see remade in VGA/SVGA is as follows:
"Quest for Glory 5"
"Broken Sword 3"
"Broken Sword 4"
"Legend of Kyrandia 3"

It's true, we have a collection of half-ass started remakes in the AGS engine, all with bits and pieces of GUI done, maybe a background or two, some sprites.  It's funny.

Frankly i am tired of "remakes and demakes" Let the original movies and games alone. They were great as they were originally intended. No need to "fix" them with political Bullshit.

I do NOT agree

I do on some levels
LSL1 for example was a horrid revamp

however

look at games like XIII coming out
or system shock 1
these games are what its about..
claiming all revamps and remakes out there are bs and political or have agenda is misinformation

most of the revamps are there to get games even working without vm boxes or to completely redo it
in the case of  the two games i listed, both are totally redone 100%
new voice acting and gfx and UI
XIII is said to even have different levels and story changes
while system shock will remain the same maps with added awesomeness

then there are the games like grim fandago revamp which add awesome stuff like commentary PLUS no elevator bug!
etc etc

so whilst I do agree on some level about leaving originals alone there are some games you can never purchase
NOLF for example, no one lives forever 1 and 2, you can NOT find this game to buy digitally due to lame IP issues
If XIII does solid I hear NOLF will be making its way back

So try not to lump everything in one box, in any format not just games but life
its like movies I have dozens I wish were never remade or redone
and yet tons that the remakes are just wicked awesome
LOTR had a cartoon as a kid for me and to see it vamped up to the newer movies was awesome
though star wars is touch and go for me I did like rogue one which was a video game and again a cartoon
I still wish to see a real revamp of "the last unicorn"
google it if you havent seen it
there is so much that is left in the dust
and some warrant redo's and some.. just dont touch it please!

case and point are the revamps done by this awesome crew.
think those shouldnt exist? I do..
Freddy pharkus part 2 please al lowe is on board!
Kings quest is a great example of failed, lame lame game that.. and I won it free in that who is the best evil villain contest(I chose prince humperdink) *im not listening !!!

hugs mate

Yeah, that KQIV remake is not happening. The girl who headed it, Karen, sadly passed away a few years ago.  She was quite young.

She wasn't old; early 30s or late 20s.

Damn.. I remember speaking to a girl working on a KQ4 remake a few years ago.. although there were 2 girls working on 2 different KQ4 remakes as I remember suggesting they link up and chat about a possible resource pooling and collaboration but doubt they ever did. I wonder which one it was that I talked to. Either way that's very sad news.

Also that screenshot isn't loading which is strange considering it was only posted a few weeks ago lol.
