32 bit games on a 64 bit system
« on: October 09, 2016, 08:36:08 AM »
Got a real puzzler here

I have the original disks 1-4 for Gothic II gold edition (includes Night of The Raven addon). These are strictly 32 bit.

The original game will install on Windows 7 64 bit and play provided I use fixed exec files. Installing NOTR, the game
refuses to even start with its data disk in the drive. I've tried all compatibility modes.

Installing all four disks on an old Vista 32 bit, the game starts just fine with disk 4.

So I guess that's it, no full install play on W7 64 bit.

depends on what dx it uses..
also depends on the exe and if it can go both ways
also depends on drivers

also depends on the OS

so  win 7 64 bit has an XP mode, if you know how to use it.. kinda like a built in VM box,

and there is always that option to  vm it.

gothic 2 has all the installers that work just fine or it couldnt be sold on gog or steam.
etc

fixed exes.. i hope you dont mean cracks.. thats another thing but those might work, just meh

compat modes arent what you are after..
since 32 bit isnt that mode.
and the installer has no clue how to read modern dx files.

note only win 7 (non home has the feature im talking about )

might want to check the exe files you are replacing,

and here is some stuff from a site on vmin it..  though it does work on 64 bit os's
just the installers need changed to look for nothing, and all digi (no discs) means copying all files to hd.. etc

Some times a virtual solution may be the answer.

note that one of the links i listed is dead , but still exists

its there the winxp mode for win7

only win 7 has this
which is why i loathe 10.. they didnt add vm support by default.
icky

so many old games will vanish.
esp as gfx cards are dx12 only soon, and that will kill .. kill old games,
only way then is to vm it or dual boot an outdated os like xp or 98se
gl!

again the way i got round most of those old games, was to copy all the files disc by disk then use the exes from say the digi releases, making sure i had all the updated old redists.

oops forgot

updated win 7 xp vm from ms

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8002

try that.

helps with loads of early 00's games and late 90s disc games like insert disc 8!
haha

I have an old HER interactive box, that has 19 discs, 6 are an expansion, its a nancy drew box but before just nancy drew games, this game doesnt run.. at all as it used quicktime codecs not found anymore, and well. nothing even 7 doenst use them but you can force it.
you cannot force 8 or 10 to even see older codecs.. ick
gl again

the above link worked ok and the large file installed ok. However, I don't see it anywhere in the start menu. Tried installing it again and a message says it's already installed. I'm sure the option to unhide and view all files are set. So, wth? Getting late.... need rest... g r r r r

There are two files to choose from. I downloaded the first one: WindowsXpmode_en-us.exe largest (64 bit?)

The second choice is WindowsXpmode_N_EN-us.exe which is smaller (32 bit?)

which one do I actually need?

Since installing the first file and I don't see any virtual directory, maybe another small file is needed to enable the xp mode directory?!

The video isn't much use for me since my system is windows 7 pro. Other posts says windows 7 pro and above, just the largest xp mode file is needed. I'll try it one more time, then just say 'to !!!! with it!

an hour later:

saw this on another site;

Virtual Machine is virtual machine, If you install XP Mode, then it should be in your start menu. Just click on it like any other program and it should start to run.
The proper setup is to install XP mode first and then Virtual PC.

So now maybe I need virtual pc?

Ok, uninstalled and reinstalled WindowsXPmode_en-us.exe and the update KB958559
The virtual mode showed but I had to create a vertual pc there. Installed Gothic II and it's addon. The game still won't start. I don't think it's any use going farther. I'll just uninstall everything and set everything back to normal and play the game on the 32 bit vista machine. Thanks for all your assistance ! !

>> Just thought of something else, while installing the game, onscreen message says it's installing a virtual file system, so maybe that was conflicting with xp mode/vertual pc.

nah nothing should conflict with the vm win 7
and that vid is to show you dont just need pro you can do it on home

same steps though

and when you create said partition, and vm build, its not going to effect the os and other games even with it enabled.
that vm box rocks, it takes away the need to dual boot and the need for an xp cd and legit key etc

other than that its almost the same as just running an xp machine you only have to tweak it for the games specs
thats the issue..
knowing how to use vms or xp builds for older games is the key
methinks its something to do with your exes you found wherever but idk

i dont have gothic 2 discs so i cant test this for ye
im sorry mate i truly tried!

gl! and keep tryin! the game does work!

Thanks.

As for the game,  Bugs Bunny once said, "There's something rotten in Denmark"

>>>

Renamed a couple of files, etc. Installing the addon sets the game at 2.7, but after tinkering with some files, it's now 2.6 but works just fine. Yaaayy

>>>

Strange thing about running the game on a 64 bit system requires some ingenuity:
Double clicking the desktop icon doesn't start the game, so double click it again and nothing. Now here's the trick;
Ctrl+Alt+Delete and Start Task Manager then choose Processes, there's two instances of Gothic2 32 bit exe's and one instance of Rundll32.exe. Select Rundll32.exe and stop it to remove one of the Gothic2 execs. The remaining Gothic2 exec starts the game. Who woulda thought?!!

sweeet glad you got it sorta working mate!!

yea that sounds like the game trying to load itself to find an older codec or such
rundll wise.
putting 2 exe's for gothic isnt strange, tons of games do that, old copy protection sometimes
or in this case it seems it was trying hard to load and failed so tried again

i was also going to suggest without vm to go and disable all but 1 core on the cpu, just as you play the game
if you get crashes lemme know that might help lots

thumbs up! glad .. its working!

I thought that since stopping rundll32 so the game would start right away, why not rename  the dll file and see if the game would start. Well.... you can't do anything to the file, can't even move it out of system32. Anyhow, game is still going strong.

Getting on in the day and soon time to head to Shoneys with a couple of friends. It's only an hour away to our monthly meeting of the Senior Citizens Runners. CIA
