Quest for Infamy / Re: The Quest for Infamy Companion
« on: December 15, 2020, 10:01:30 AM »
I have another question, this time not related to the secret rooms, but to the slaver assasination quest. After Roehm frees the slaves, one of them points at something in the wall - but where? I suppose that it's some hidden treasure, but how to get it?

Banter and Chit-Chat! / Re: A Lament for Adventure Games
« on: November 12, 2020, 03:18:51 AM »
Oldschool adventure games are still being made! I still prefer them, particularly the "quest" type and, of course, with pixel graphics, but it's just not true that the genre is dead.
"FoxTail"!
"The Crimson Diamond"!
"Zniw Adventure"!
"Incantamentum"!
"Feria d'Arles" and "Bull Out of Arles"!
"Betrayed Alliance" (EGA! Text parser! And even made on SCI engine!)!
"Cascadia Quest"!
"Watch Over Christmas"!
"Rosewater"!
"Future Flashback"!
"Darkside Detective"!
"If on a Winter's Night, Four Travellers..."!
"Inspector Waffles"!
"Nine Noir Lives"!
"Born Punk"!
"Theropods"!
"Plot of the Druid"!
"Billy Masters Was Right"!
"Urban Witch Story"!
"Brassheart"!
"The Adventures of Black Hawk"!
"Gibbous: A Cthulhu Adventure"!
"Backbone"!
Even the new Leisure Suit Larrys (I rather enjoyed them despite being an asexual woman who fully excludes the possibility of personally having sex - no friggin' way!), while being way more commercial than most games on the list (heck, some of them are free, for example "Urban Witch Story", "Betrayed Alliance"...), are, in terms of gameplay, mostly a classic quest. I agree that most of these games are distinctly niche, mostly made for a not very big community of people who just prefer the retro style. But they exists and in fact, it amazes me how much the community is alive! Retro game development is a real community, developers all the time share information about oter games. If the forum feels dead, it seems to me that it's because traditional fora are no longer the dominant form of online communication. Unfortunately for me (for example, I have technically become a member of the Polish Psychedelic Society - but I got nothing out of it, because intragroup communication is Facebook-based...  :-\), I just feel a very strong push away from using social media - sure, I may read them (and this is how I know how alive is the retro gaming community), but I just can't force myself to create accounts because of my very strong need not to be in the majority.

Banter and Chit-Chat! / Re: Congratulations, Steve, on your new transplant!
« on: November 11, 2020, 09:43:00 PM »
OK, now the post I haven't had an opportunity to send and have to rewrite.

I wanted to congratulate too. I felt sad and sorry for you and now I'm relieved to know that you managed to get a transplant. I hope that, now that it is known, doctors will also be able to keep your autoimmune disease in check.
Rest well and don't overwork yourself immediately.

I also wanted to express hope that the horrible current American healthcare system won't last forever (and that USA stop being so cocksure and regarding itself as the absolutest pinnacle of democracy). The right to life and health are fundamental human rights, so a commercial-only healthcare system is always a violation of human rights. I have also recently read an article on the Polish web press (it was about the elections and the downfall of American system in general), in which the author, a moderate liberal, said something like: even people who consider a free market the best solution should be against the American healthcare system - because it only discredits free market ideas. It is much less efficient than European systems, but very efficient in creating problems unknown in Europe...
I just wonder: what arguments can people - let's say, Republican opponents of Obamacare - give in defense of such an unjust, anti-democratic, anti-life system. Because anyone who defends free market ideas when human life is at stake proves their absolute lack of basic decency. For all I care they can even print the money if that's what is needed to keep the system running, but free healthcare is a human right.

Anyway, back to games - I find it intriguing how you mention that you started working on "Quest for Infamy" after your previous transplant and should therefore start making "QfI2" now... I hope that the game is made indeed. The ending of "QfI1" was a bit of a suspense and the idea of a second part is very promising, also because the game world could be very different from that of Lonaria...

Here's a screenshot:

And an explanation that it's more of an experiment than actual plans:

Hmm a remake of IV is in the works?

Haha, nah. We've started a remake of practically every single Sierra game at some point.

Banter and Chit-Chat! / Remakes and "demakes"
« on: August 15, 2020, 11:36:55 AM »
I'm starting this topic because, having no account, I can't comment anything on Facebook.
I really liked the KQ4 VGA screenshot posted, so I wanted to express my opinion. In case you would actually remake the game, small changes in puzzles could be a really good idea. Particularly: I hate the troll cave. The troll appearing randomly is just annoying - all that worst aspect of Sierra games - and the board over chasm puzzle is horrible. It would be much better if the puzzle was not just about random clicking, but about introducing a slightly different solution that would allow Rosella to actually know where she had dropped the board. Something I just though about: a fluorescent fungus, for example? Used to mark the ends of the board so that Rosella can see them? And, perhaps, in order not to make it too easy - still a requirement to click very carefully between these two spots? Just my quick thought.
I also really liked the "beam me" Easter egg and I regret that it's only found in the AGI version. In fact, it was THE factor which encouraged me to play the AGI version as well.
Other "remakeable" games... and I'm not pushing anyone to do it, I realise that it's hard, just expressing my ideas in case anyone decides to actually do it. I dislike two particular aspect of "The Colonel's Bequest": illogicalities about finding the body (particularly the moment when Laura stumbles upon drunk Ethel, leaving the garden... and possibly just the next moment finds her body in the garden.
I didn't really like how the passage of time in "Dagger of Amon-Ra" is closer to real time - it's possible to miss some things, it prevents the player from looking carefully at everything... But the passage of time in "The Colonel's Bequest" is not perfect either, one 15-minute interval can take seconds and another more than 15 minutes...
And I hate Laura's notebook for its extremely artificial language. "Religious item found" - who would have written something like this?! If Laura just wrote "There's an old Bible hidden under the chapel floor" - it would have had the same effect: confirming that Laura has found it and has a chance at becoming a Super Sleuth.

A little note on "demakes": I don't like this name because I firmly represent the opinion that hand-painted VGA is just much more beautiful than 3D, so 3D to VGA is an improvement. Or than photographic art. I don't know how scary are parts 2 and 3 of "Gabriel Knight" (part 1 is still acceptable for me, but I was for example really scared when playing "The Last Door" series and only played it at daytime... the plot just drew me in nevertheless), but I never played them first of all because of their ugly graphics.
(I, anyway, also don't like some aspects of GK1, particularly: wouldn't it have been much more natural to have Gabriel speak German - and still have it represented as English? Particularly since the German version of the chapel poem doesn't fully rhyme... Don't tell me that there are no Americans who speak foreign languages!)
The same goes, particularly, for two non-Sierra games: parts 3 and 4 of "Broken Sword". And these games really have great plot ideas, but still parts 3 and 4 are horribly ugly.
My list of games I would most gladly see remade in VGA/SVGA is as follows:
"Quest for Glory 5"
"Broken Sword 3"
"Broken Sword 4"
"Legend of Kyrandia 3"

Quest for Infamy / Re: Fireflies bug?
« on: April 22, 2020, 01:01:32 PM »
Sorry for bothering you. It was no bug after all. I was sure that I got the message confiming that I caught the fireflies, but I didn't. It was a jar with glowing fungus only and I didn't notice it.

I'm quite sure that I know what place you mean. I'll just have to figure out how exactly to get inside.
Thanks a lot anyway.

Ouch, so I guess it's time for another replay and not just peeking into the game!... Since magical classes are my favourite anyway (so I'll save the Sorcerer for last), I'll ask: could you please provide me with some hints about the other classes as to what are the additional requirements?
I have actually found "Item #1" before, I just didn't realise what it's used for. Now I think I know what you mean. If there are other extra actions for the other classes, please provide me with some hints.
I suppose that

I have no experience with version 1.0 of the game, so I have no idea which rooms weren't accessible then.

I checked it, I have version 1.1. So I should have the secret areas, right?
Spoiler (hover to show)
I'm surprised that you have paid very little attention to the fact that it induces a bug: I lose access to the icon bar when attempting the action in, it seems, the right place.

I think I found one of the places, but there seems to be a bug.

How do I check what is my game's version? And if it's an old version - I bought the game on GOG, can I update it and if yes, then how?

Quest for Infamy / The Quest for Infamy Companion
« on: April 14, 2020, 06:44:31 AM »
I have actually even sent an e-mail to Infamous Quests, asking about it, but have received no response. :( Maybe the message got stuck somewhere, for example landed in the spam folder.
Anyway, I wanted to ask a question about the "Quest for Infamy Companion".
It's known that there are some secret areas in "Quest for Infamy". I (again) can't find a screenshot from the one with the pool, but this is, if I remember well, a secret area too:

Just posting it as an example.
I have been unable to find these secret areas on my own. Does the "Quest for Infamy Companion" include hints on how to get there?

Banter and Chit-Chat! / Re: Use windows 7 forever?
« on: February 12, 2020, 05:46:18 PM »
I'm a huge "technological conservative". I don't enjoy learning new technologies, if something is working for me, I'm not keen at changing it... I still use a Nokia 6210 from the year 2000 and absolutely don't want to use a smartphone - using an old mobile makes me Different! I'm also very used to just the visual aspect of older technologies. I have Windows 7 - installed by choice when it was already becoming obsolete - but the appearance of my taskbar, start menu, that upper part of a window (how is it called?) is still like in Windows 3. You know - gray bars, navy blue for active windows, a small start icon... I just like it best, I can't get used to newer versions.
I also have absolutely no idea, really, how to use new Paint, I use "Paint XP for Windows 7".
So I would absolutely prefer to use Windows 7 indefinitely.

Banter and Chit-Chat! / Re: What do y'all think of "mage's initiation"?
« on: February 15, 2019, 04:03:37 PM »
I like "Mage's Initiation". Well, at first I got the impression that differences between classes are really small, but later I got used to it. Graphically speaking, it is one of the most beautiful games ever. Combat sequences aren't perfect, but also graphically speaking it's the best among all adventure-RPGs I have played (QfG 1-4 + 1-2 remakes, QfI, "Heroine's Quest" and "Mage's Initiation" - I haven't played "Hero-U" because it's mostly 3D :(*). The spell icons and decorative borders look beautiful, I have even set the bar's opacity to maximum so that I could admire it in all its beauty, without the rest of the area peering through the bar. What I find a bit missing is good, consistent storywriting - the game rather drags on at first, feels unimmersive... only somewhere around the middle the story gets more interesting - not really through the "planned" plot of D'arc's quest (though the places he visits are beautiful), it's rather the conspiracy he discovers that really makes the game more exciting.
I hope that more parts will be made, but the developers wrote that they just can't spend almost 10 years making each part, so they are looking for some publisher who could help speed up the process.
*Btw - the cartoon cutscenes in "Mage's Initiation" are definitely ugly and just don't suit the rest of the game at all. I don't dislike cartoon graphics either, for example I really like Humongous Entertainment's games, particularly the Pajama Sam series - but, well, in "Mage's Initiation" these cutscenes look much worse. They would be much better if they were done in a style similar to the intro and outro.

IQ Chat / Re: What's the status of Roehm to Ruin?
« on: August 23, 2018, 02:41:36 PM »
I hope it works. I've been hoping for QfI2 because the first part has quite an open ending.
I really feel sorry for you. How is it possible for life-saving surgery not to be refunded? Nobody should be expected to pay for survival. Nobody should be expected to die just because they happen not to have money for surgery.
I don't care where does healthcare get money from. For all I care, they can even print their money. But free healthcare is a human right.
