Quest for Infamy / Re: Look what came in the mail today!

I'll take the game in punch cards any day.

While taking a college FORTRAN class in the early 1990s, our professor would hand out used punch cards to each student as bookmarks for our textbooks.

He also claimed that General Motors and NASA still had millions upon millions of dollars invested in punch cards and punch card technology... which were absolutely worthless and obsolete at that time (which is now almost 20 years ago)!   :o

I remember the fun of cassette tape drives on the Tandy CoCo3. Still have one, actually. Though, I can't ever get it to work. Tons of tapes with games on them too.

Ah, duplicating CoCo games were the easiest with cassettes -- as long as you had a quality dual-cassette recorder.

Tape A to Tape B, baby!   ;)

Heh, all the comments afterwards were like "More Quest For Glory?! Yes please!"  I wish they knew about us!

Bt

I noticed that, too...

If only there were some way that WE could type some words and then click "post", if only to let them know that we're here, too!   :-[

Seriously, why not Email the article's author?  He's got a link to his Email on the top-right of the page, right underneath his pic.  He likes QFG-type games, it might be a way to piggy-back on the "Mage's" preview, and I'm sure these guys would like a follow-up story that just happens to fall right in their lap...   :)

Destructoid just published a preview for "Mage's Initiation", based on a press-only alpha demo...

We made funding! Yey!

Guess I can contribute now...

I thought this one was programmed so you'd always get it exactly on the last try. At least, I always have.

I failed numerous times in Demo 2.0.  I would get the first 2 sets with 4 different cards, then on the third pick, I'd get one of the last 2 "unknowns" and then one from the first 4.   :-[

Definitely some "luck" involved in this one...

The one that gets me is the Brigand drinking game.  The last choice seems to be 50%/50% of choosing correctly for me...

It's called N.O.

"Necromancers Only."

Bt

I foresee an Abbott-and-Costello "Who's On First"-like routine in the near future:

Quote

Roehm: "Can I join into Necromancers Only?"

Prospero: "NO?"

Roehm: "But I really want to!"

Prospero: " 'You really want to' what?"

Roehm: "Find the entrance to Necromancers Only"

Prospero: "You mean NO?"

Roehm: "I mean yes!"

Prospero: "NO?  You may join us."

Roehm: " 'No, I may join you?'  Isn't that the same as 'yes, I CAN'T join you' ?"

...after several confusing minutes...

Roehm: "Ah, forget it !!!  I'll be a brigand instead -- what's the quickest way back to the bar ?"

It's be known as S.H.I.T.

Sorceror's something something something.

C'mon, man.

If you're gonna be crude and crass, at last make an attempt at following through with a punchline -- even if it's really lame...

Here's one off the top of my head:

"Sorcerer's Hand In Treachery."

So, there you go -- and you're welcome.   ;)

Watch out, or else next year, when Seth McFarlane hosts the Video Game Awards, you'll be part of the montage for the opening song "We Saw Your Pix [-els]"...

Quest for Infamy / Re: How evil is too evil?
« on: February 26, 2013, 09:28:54 AM »
Yes - like I say, it's not about being evil, but more about being a scoundrel.  Against the grain, against the law - against the "law" isn't always evil.  Think of Han Solo in that respect.  A smuggler, a knave... not an insane murderer.

Bt

Arrggh!  I was just going to say that -- Roehm is like Hans Solo, in that he's also a rakish scoundrel, a lovable rogue, a scruffy-looking nerf-herder, just looking out for his own best interests in this cold, harsh and lonely world...  Trusting few, taking advantage of many...

Mind you, he's Han Solo from the original 1977 "It's-Greedo-or-me-so-I'll-shoot-first" movie, not the 1997 "Greedo-shoots-first-therefore-I-am-justified-by-defending-myself-(see-I'm-not-such-a-bad-guy-after-all---just-you-wait-and-see!)" Special Edition.

I know it's been discussed to death elsewhere (here I am bringing it up after almost 16 years(!)), but Han was an "unknown quantity" as far as his true motivations and loyalties throughout the 1977 movie -- that's what made him such an interesting character.  For the 1997 Special Edition, his "innate goodness" was ret-conned in that one scene, telegraphing his "basic decency" a mile away for the rest of the movie.

It comes down to 1977's "choice" (Han actively chooses to fire first) versus 1997's "no choice" (Han reacts to defend himself).  It did a disservice to his character arc just to make the scene more palatable for the the "kiddie" sensibilities...

Thanks, Broomie and s_d !

It was a given to transfer the drop-down menu options from QFI onto the various Intellivision controller buttons.  However, I didn't want it to be just plain, generic text against a plain background; all of the best overlays had intricate background artwork and/or unique shapes for the buttons...

The "shield" shape was obvious (for the medieval setting), but then inspiration hit me: how could little Intellivision Roehm be infamous?  Hence, the "Infamous Actions" buttons -- Drink Ale, Hurl Insult, and Start Fight -- were born !

Thanks, Lupin and SarahLiz!   :)

Re-creating QFI for the first gaming system our family had in the early '80s was a lot of fun, and where the good old days of early video gaming are concerned, I certainly appreciate your kind words for these ancient "flights of fancy"...   :)

You win the internet, my friend.

Thank you for the kind words, Lambonius!

I had a lot of fun designing/creating the overlay, and the screenshot -- even thought is very crude by today's standards -- still took most of a day to look "just right"...

As such, I really appreciate all of you artists who are contributing to the game.  I can't image how difficult it is or how much work is involved to make something look realistic!

Where's that "blushing" icon...

Seriously, thanks, Klytos and BT -- you guys are the best!

After some hard work getting the emulator to accept the rom, I was able to get screenshots from the Intellivision version of "Quest For Infamy":

Close-up of "Mr. Roehm Meets Udo" -- check out that 8-bit detail !

I was even able to dig up the old overlays that went with the game; here's a scan:
