More to my point though is that the hardware of the time of VHS could not display the quality we have today with Blu-Ray.  So, would you rather have the old version, copied from VHS, that is an inferior quality to begin with, or would you rather have the optimized version of a movie that has been released at a higher quality because the technology is now available?

**FYI, I am not expressing any view here, but I am interested in the conversation that can be had

Fair enough on the old hardware point.  I agree that digital is a better route to go for long term preservation.  I just don't think there is enough interest to force the hand of big companies to do it for us.  It takes those who are interested in finding ways to make it work.  To put the demand on Microsoft or Sony or whomever isn't the solution either.

As for the expensive titles, those are few and far between.  I am referring to the hardware which there tends to be thousands of machines laying around gathering dust.  Most still work and are inexpensive.

Why do I like to watch old movies? Because I like to, sometime the classics are the best! No one has found a way to top them!

Just to connect the old movies to the issue of backwards compatibility, when DVDs came out, they couldn't play VHS tapes.  People either kept their old stuff or moved on.  They even made machines that would take both.  There was no "backwards compatibility."  Now, to be fair, Blu-Ray players can play DVDs, but will this always be the case?  Or will some other upgrade render old DVDs obsolete?

Or, better yet, if they can improve the quality of a movie by releasing it on Blu-Ray, then why would you want to watch the inferior version of the same movie?  This can open the conversation into re-releases of media such as movies, games, etc.  For example, I am looking forward to the new Grim Fandango, but it is the SAME game.  Should I move on and enjoy the newer version or just play the old version that I have?  I gladly purchased the Halo Masterchief collection.  One of the reasons was the remastered version of Halo 2.  It is fantastic.  Would I ever go back and play Halo 2 on my first gen xbox?  Not a chance.

My Wii-U (it was a day one black 32GB model) is backwards compatible.

My point about PC and backwards compatibility is that as the hardware changes, the software has to change as well.  That is why we get new operating systems.  It just doesn't look like video games because there aren't official releases for the next generation PC.  That doesn't change the fact that certain older programs just wont work with new hardware.  It isn't Microsoft's fault that this is the case.  So what ends up happening is that emulation is necessary to get older software to run.  This is true with video game systems as well.  The consoles that provide backwards compatibility (xbox 360 does in fact play xbox games as well) do it through emulating the older consoles.  That is why they do not work perfectly with all games.  I just don't see why they should have to do this.  No one complained when SNES came out and you couldn't play the NES games on it.  Consumers tend to demand too much when it isn't profitable for a company.  If it costs too much to develop a feature, and the feature isn't considered profitable, then I see no reason why they should include it.  Now, the argument can be made that more people will buy a new console/OS if it has the features that they want, etc.  But the question becomes, how many people are not willing to upgrade due to the lack of that specific feature.  Then business decisions get made.  Plain and simple.  I am not saying that backwards compatibility is bad, in fact I wish my xbox one would play my 360 and original xbox games.  I would love it if it did.  But I cannot demand they provide that feature.  I can request it and hope it happens (then have hinted it is currently being worked on).  But I also know that if I want technology and games, etc to continue to advance, the businesses behind them must remain profitable.

Btw, the gamecube only sold about 20 million units.  As a whole, that is a flop for its generation on consoles.

I just went through the portrait thread in the private side of the forums and found this nugget from Bt before anything was actually drawn for Hummel.

This series has been a lot of fun to watch.  So far they have played KQ6, The Dig, QFG1, and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.  Throughout the play-throughs, they discuss/rag on some of the poor design elements of adventure games but have serious conversations about the games and their design.  This is their end of the year recap episode and I really enjoyed the conversation.  It is a good watch.

Yeah.  eBay uses paypal so you could still do that.  I use it all the time (buying and selling).  I have never had a problem.  If you were to register for an account, you could pay through paypal, so you wouldn't need to do anything except log into your paypal when checking out.  With shipping it looks to be like $40 US so not too bad given I have not seen it elsewhere.

I have to say, regardless of what the game turns out to be, I LOVE that it has been this controversial.  I think it's important to make a stink about this kind of stuff, for the sake of the "genre."  haha

I don't know how I feel about it.  It seems to be mostly bickering between old school adventure fans and tell tale adventure fans, and then some other adventure game fans that have not really taken a side.  The issue is that the "controversy" is between the adventure game community.  This is the same community that typically wont pay more than $10 for a GOOD game, and even then, they wait for a sale.  This is the community that has proven time and time again that there is no reason for large companies to pursue games in the genre.  That is why we only get Tell Tale style games.  And even then, those game release at a price of $30 on XBOX One and PS4 and quickly fall to $10-$15.  The adventure game community doesn't actually support adventure games when it comes to what matters most to the companies making them; their wallets.  At the end of the day, the only way we will ever get new games using the old IPs is to make them for a new audience which means they CANNOT be traditional adventures.  It is a sad reality, but the adventure game community has helped cerate the problem.

That may be my number one thing that I am hoping for.  I hope that the story is told through game play and not just cut scenes.

As for QTEs, I don't think I have ever liked them at all.  If it ends up being full of them, I will also be disappointed.  Like I said, I just want a good game at this point.  Other than that, I have no expectations.

Again I wouldnt mind if this was a game INSPIRED by KQ but not with the title.

That could be any adventure game that came after KQ.

This new game is using the characters, story and world of the original game.  It is KQ, not some inspired spin off.  This isn't taking a supporting character and giving them their own game.  It is Graham, it is Daventry, it is KQ.

When books are made into movies, they keep the title.  Sometimes they do a fantastic job (Lord of the Rings), and sometimes they don't (The Hobbit - up for debate, but I think it is terrible).  In making movies based on books or comics, changes get made to the characters, the story, etc.  But at the end of the day, the book and the movie are two different ways of telling the same story.  Typically, people like whichever they read/see first more than the other one.I believe it is possible for both to be excellent.  It doesn't have to be one or the other.  The same MIGHT be true for KQ.  It is possible that the new game, although different in mechanics can in fact tell the same story in a new way that works.  And, if we want the stories to live on, as Shawn said, a newer audience must be created.  The game has to work for them, not just adventure game purists.  As I mentioned earlier, if a new game draws them in and sparks an interest in the story and the original games, it can't be bad for the games.  We may never have another classic point and click KQ adventure, and that is sad, but that doesn't make the new KQ game terrible or wrong or anything else.  I will wait and see.

A few things....

I love adventure games.  They will always hold a special place for me as they were the games I grew up with.  But, at the same time I was playing KQ, SQ, QFG, etc, I also had a NES and a SEGA Genesis.  I played console games and loved them too.  I am a gamer.  I love games.  The notion that because a game is made for a console and the "console generation" means that the game isn't worth playing seems extremely short sided.  Just because the game isn't being made for adventure game purists, does not mean it can't or wont be good.  It doesn't mean it will be good either.  There are many bad adventure games.  There are many bad console games.  I personally like good games, regardless of genre.  If they make a good game in the KQ universe that tells the KQ story, then great.  I would rather have that than a Tell-Tale style interactive movie masked with an "adventure game" label.  If KQ gets revived as something different than what it was, it doesn't have to be a bad thing.  If people play it and love it and it causes them to go back and see the inspiration by playing the old games that would be amazing too.  I hate that people have already judged the game before it has even been played.  To me, that is the worst thing I am seeing now that the trailer has been released.

The trailer reminded me a lot of Zelda. I love Zelda, and I love KQ. I will likely buy it. I hope to enjoy it for whatever type of game it turns out to be. I am clearly not expecting an adventure game though.

I just finished Dune for the first time.  I think I enjoyed it much more as an adult than I would have if I had read it when I was younger.

So, do I continue in the series?  Not sure if the sequels live up to the first, etc.  Thoughts?
