Installer issue
« on: August 18, 2014, 12:50:22 PM »
Just installed, when trying to run setup I get hits message:

winsetupQFI.exe is not a valid win32-program.

Not what could that mean?  ???

Can you run the other winsetup file and the game okay? Also, what version of Windows are you using?

winsetupQFI.exe has problems with XP, I think - but winsetup.exe should work just fine.

There was only one setup file with the game I got. Don't see a winsetup.exe there.
Anyway, the game runs fine, though the screen is off by an inch.

Where did you get the game?  Steam, gog, etc.?   There should be 2 setup files.  We perhaps can upload one here?  I would try, but I am not at home where my QFI stuff is.

Well, I may have been ahead of myself asking. I downloaded the game right when it was publicized but haven't had time to play it until now. I can't even remember where I got it.
I am a backer and I think I got it from Humble. But that was some weeks ago. You may already have resolved this   ::)

Hmmm.  Every version should include both .exe files, winsetup.exe and WinsetupQFI.exe - we've never not had them both in a package.

I can confirm this isnt a game issue

its windows

I have win 7 64 bit, and anytime i run an ags game  either in exe for game or the setups it says
this didnt install correctly,
same went for hero6 which im helping run through the code on from sourceforge

same errors
its just windows burping at the older engines and res etc,
so just click  THIS INSTALLED CORRECTLY and you wont ever see that message again,

there is a way to turn that off in windows also but I wouldnt recommend it

I dont get any error messages saying things didnt install correctly, just the one mentioned above.
Anyway, I found winsetup.exe in the game folder, my bad.
And it works.
Still can't fix the screen being off to the left, though.

That is odd! Can you send a screenshot?  Maybe we can help.

I love xp, truly
for backwards compat nothing rocks more, maaybe win 98 se
but

you can also manually edit the cfg file,
I pmed ya

but for xp yea there is no   "this installed correctly" tick
to xp the program is corrupt, but its not
try 2x neighbor filter  (I run 4x neighbor)

[sound]
digiid=-1
midiid=-1
digiwin=1096302880
midiwin=-1
digiwinindx=0
midiwinindx=0
[misc]
gamecolordepth=32
defaultres=2
screenres=0
letterbox=1
defaultgfxdriver=D3D9
gfxdriver=D3D9
titletext=Quest For Infamy - Setup
windowed=0
refresh=0
gfxfilter=StdScale4
sideborders=0

so for the 2x  the gfxfilter line reads
gfxfilter=StdScale2
which is 640x480,
which looks no different in game, only to the desktop res say if you alt tab or some such stuffs

might be sideborders or letterbox being disabled  try to backup the cfg, or run the other exe as admin if you can,
might be time to upgrade to win 7 or in another 4-5 months win9 will be a REQUIREMENT per microsoft for all games for windows live etc, ack i dislike microsoft, shrug

That is because the config tool has "setup" in its name. It is an automatic compatibility feature for installers in Vista and higher. I would have to look up exactly what triggers it with files with "setup" in its name, but the previous version of stable NSIS had the same problem if the compiled installer had "setup" in its name.

Unfortunately, you cannot change the name of the AGS config tool to avoid it as it breaks it if it does not have the original name. I am not familiar enough with AGS to know if this can be changed from the game source. Cris Jones would be better off changing the name to something like "Config.exe" or WinConfig.exe".

Now this is really odd.

Overnight, this issue has fixed itself. I have no idea how.

When I play the game now, the screen is centered. Yesterday, it wasn't.

Anyway, everything just seems to work perfectly.

And what a great game it is. I love it!

I may be breaking all the rules of good conduct on internet forums, but I simply have to repeat myself on this one:

THIS GAME IS GREAT!

Made it through day 2 today, and I love it still more every minute!

The witty dialogue, the almost nihilistic storyteller, the lovely voice acting, the beautiful scenery, the lively and charming animation... I can't stop myself writing this.

Only, I'm really bad as a brigand. I showed mercy. I have much to learn.

I love this   ;D
