Banter and Chit-Chat! / Heroine's Quest Update
« on: November 14, 2013, 10:08:12 AM »
Getting very excited about this QFG style game! :)

this part sounds really cool (Elder Scrolls like):
"Characters aren't always stationary in the one place, and often move to other locations during the day. You can even follow them from room to room! This brings a lot of life and realism to the cities, and is not commonly seen in adventure games at all!"

This game is so epic, it got Team Infamous put in the Quest for Glory wiki!

http://questforglory.wikia.com/wiki/Quest_for_Glory_4_%C2%BD:_So_You_Thought_You_Were_a_Hero%3F#cite_note-9

Btw, someone should add a link to this topic, and include the quote from the author, as well as information about the bug-fixing update that's been made!

I'd really love it if the actual creator would come here and field questions, that game was so awesome I'd love to ask how he made it!  ;D

Yes I've had contact with Baggins & his QFG wiki admins in the past. They stuck up for me on the wiki in 2010 when Elsa first threatened me with the banning for mentioning QFG4.5 and in the years since. As a result they got into some 'wiki edit wars' with QFMG people which was rather amusing. Baggins even visited my site and emailed me with praise for my work offering a mod job there making their QFG fan game wiki list as comprehensive as my website. I accepted his offer but after an hour or so of trying I officially decided that wiki editing was quite possibly the dumbest most user-unfriendly thing I'd ever touched in my life lol. Feel kinda bad as he was really nice to me and excited to get me onboard but god I had enough trouble finding the time to work on my own site let alone a wiki page who's editing drives you insane lol.

Nope she's never touched the game would you believe lol.

Really?  How do you know that?

I do know she claimed to have played it once, and referenced the "log" thing in the game as the one thing in it she actually enjoyed.

Because in my multiple arguments with her about banning the game she repeatedly said that she hasn't played it and doesn't need to.

So are you sure it was Elsa that said she liked the log? I thought it was Orion that said that.

Yup you're talking about the exact same problem everyone gets when they try to get it working without any help. That's why I said to go and get the walkthrough from My QFG4.5 page as it contains a installation guide which you will need to get the game working.

Follow the guide and if you're still struggling we'll try and get you to the finish line. :)

I downloaded the game fairly recently and couldn't get it to run, sadly...does it work with Dosbox or anything?  Anyone have a link to a current download?

Edit:  ok, probably only the link in the first post.  I'll just try to run it again when I get home from vacation & see if I'm more successful this time.  I'm not too handy running games if I have to tweak things a bit ;)

Sarah if you hop over to my QFG fan page (link in my signature) and visit the QFG4.5 page its got the download links and my walkthrough that contains a installation guide. If you have any troubles post here and we can all try & put our heads together to help out again lol.

PS a girls reaction to the game would be 'interesting' to say the least hahaha.

Well that's all folks.. according to the precinct website the project is dead.

I made a similar thread to this over at Himalaya studios and got some VERY interesting inside info on the mess this all turned out to be. Jim really should have stuck with Himalaya, I would have thrown my money at that duo! Each of these sierra great come backs have worked because they teamed up with good people with good connections, I guess someone was due some bad luck choice wise and it was Jim who got dealt it. :(

sure enough things didn't go so well so Jim's cancelled the kickstarter and moved to their own fundraising site

Btw, who made this game?  Does he still have any internet presence or read this at all?  I'd love to thank him personally!  There any old interviews with him out there at all?

He disappeared a year or so after the game came out and as far as I know no one ever heard from him again.

That is until a few weeks ago when I got the shock of my err online related life lol and received an email from him about my website tribute to his game:

"Dude, I made QFG 4.5 back before college starting in 1999 up to 2000. I'd put it out there then sort of forgot/lost track. I told some friends about it, they googled it and found your page.

Thank you so much for the re-vamp! I still have the original source code, I'm not sure if that would have helped. I am extremely flattered by what you did for my old pet project. Frankly, my humor back then was a tad sophomoric and my spelling atrocious, but I'm very glad the game brought some people joy and that you put it back out there.

Cheers friend!"

I replied to him thanking him for the game etc and told him a bit about the potential remake (making it clear I wasn't the one working on it), this place, you guys, Quest for Infamy and Hero-U etc and chucked in some links. Never heard back from him sadly but nevertheless there ya go hey.. its been over a friggin decade and he's appeared.. briefly haha.

Moments like that are one of the reasons I made my QFG fan game tribute pages as I wanted authors to see how passionate fans can get about their little projects & that their work was never forgotten, and its awesome when one comes out of retirement/wilderness/exile to thank me and in most cases offer new material not seen by the public. Eg a similar thing happened with Klytos with QFI way before the kickstarter, Chris with the old Heroine's Quest, Orion with project Katrina and more I'm forgetting. :)

bahahaha that sex in video games thing he links to cracked me up.

"Btw, has the "remake" of QFG 4.5 come out yet?  It'd be nice to play this game without it freezing every 30 minutes."

I've tried to contact the guy who's working on it several times and got no reply. Looks like its dead sorry. :(

does it require you to shake someone/things hand? ;)

great pic!

Yeah once I saw there was no affordable boxed copy I thought I'd still throw in $15 but saw that I wouldn't even get the game LOL! This is the first kickstarter I've seen that's not offered the game down that low.

Think I'll wait for a few days and see what happens as you can bet they're getting a truckload of feedback right now and will hopefully modify the rewards. I've backed all the other sierra greats returning projects even if their new games didn't interest me much so I'd like to help this one too. The size of my backing will depend on if they make some changes.

IQ Chat / Re: Quest for Glory fan projects

Thanks guys. In the end I went with the widget style flash mp3 player that had good customisable colour options allowing me to change its look to the theme of each page. Being flash it obviously won't work on a lot of mobile phones but neither did the quicktime midis so nothing's changed there haha. One day I'll find something easy that works on everything lol!

A mate sent me a really good midi to mp3 converter website that I used to convert all my midis to mp3s making them all actually sound considerably better than they did. Although due to me trying to minimise the space taken (4k midis became 3mb mp3s grr) I had to compress them down to pretty much the lowest quality mp3s you can do which sucks but oh well. At least now everyone with a PC will get the music.

Oh and I know autoplay is considered a no no. I guess I've always ignored that rule on my site because its a small low traffic site and I find music so important in creating that immersion factor that makes you feel like your almost back in the game when you visit the page. I haven't received any angry complaints yet over the years so I guess people 'get' what I try to achieve haha. I always make sure I have visible player controls to allow people to stop the music if they are annoyed.

Yeah sorry I should have been more specific, obviously its not the standard sierra style point and click from afar as this is a first person game.. I meant it had similarities to police quests style of you driving up to a situation and making choices on how to handle it and then being rated on how well you followed police procedures. Jim was quite methodical with that stuff in the PQ games while throwing in plenty of action and adventure in there too.

I probably won't be a high contributer either as Police quest is probably my least played sierra series but I still have the collection box somewhere haha. Plus he doesn't seem to be offering a physical box at the $70-120 mark unlike the other kickstarters which is a bit of a shame as getting that boxed copy is what it was all about back in the sierra days.
