Title: Paul Quest II
Post by: Brainiac on October 11, 2016, 10:03:42 PM
I'm not sure if this should go here or not, but you guys might want to keep an eye on the SQ2 downloads and see if there's a spike...because the LoadingReadyRun YouTube channel just uploaded this.

I haven't tracked SQ2 downloads in years, possibly because I give absolutely zero fucks at this point.

Paul Quest II Part 2 of Space Quest II v1.1 (it kinda looks like the Roman numeral two) is now online, too.

...yes, I'm easily amused.

Completely off-topic, but what is that Space Quest title font anyway? Is there a name for it or something similar?

I know for our game we had someone custom make it.

From 4½ years ago, here's my rendition of the SQ1 & SQ2 title logo font, plus the alternate P & Q from SQ3 located in positions 'p' & 'q', respectively.

And here is the SQ1 & SQ2 credits font (if you're interested):

Nice! Actually right after I posted that I did a Google search and that's the one that came up. Made an account and grabbed it. One minor qualm is there are no special symbols like the apostrophe or exclamation point. Something you can easily create yourself if one really needed it in Photoshop or something though. Well done!

Besides that, I was specifically looking for the font on the boxes where the A comes to a point at the top instead of a flat side. I wonder what font that guy's using for the thumbnail of his Paul Quest video.

Thanks for the kind words, MI!

========================================

I uploaded a de-skewed/straightened perspective version of the Paul Quest logo font to

https://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/ (https://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/)

but that returned no similar suggestions.

========================================

Next, I tried

http://www.identifont.com/index.html (http://www.identifont.com/index.html)

and selected "Limited Set of Letters" (PAUL QUEST) under "Fonts by Appearance."  After picking the correct attributes, the 23rd suggestion looks like the right one:

EF DIGITAL SANS
http://www.identifont.com/find?font=digital+sans&q=Go (http://www.identifont.com/find?font=digital+sans&q=Go)

The curved top of the A and the tail of the Q are quite distinctive...

And due to the time period (dark ages of the late '80s, where PostScript/True Type fonts were in their infancy) in which the packaging was created: while it's possible that the logo font design IS a known, semi-famous typeface (or modified from one), it is more likely that it's simply a 'unique' design -- and I use the term loosely -- specifically created for the game box and accompanying artwork.

It may exist or might be found in typography sample books/catalogs from the 1960s/1970s/1980s, from before the computer typography revolution.  It may also have been digitally recreated in the years after 1987 (possibly by a fan?), but I haven't found it in my searches, either.

That EF Digital Sans is spot on! I did some further searching and found a Bold and Bold Italic variation which looks much closer to the weight of the box lettering. The only small problem is that the characters "D," "P," and "0" have their holes filled in with black while the italics version doesn't. A strange oddity. Perhaps it's a bug in the font? I don't know how fonts work at all.

http://fontsov.com/font/digitalsansefbold47553.html (http://fontsov.com/font/digitalsansefbold47553.html)

Better yet, even heavier variations!:

https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/ef/digital-sans-now/ml-bold/ (https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/ef/digital-sans-now/ml-bold/)
https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/ef/digital-sans-now/ml-extrabold/ (https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/ef/digital-sans-now/ml-extrabold/)
https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/ef/digital-sans-now/ml-black/ (https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/ef/digital-sans-now/ml-black/)

And Here's the whole pack (https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/ef/digital-sans-now/)

The only "issue" is that they are much closer to the SQ3 lettering style than SQ1/SQ2 (where the bottom stroke of the loop on the 'P' doesn't go as low as it does on the SQ1/SQ2 lettering).

Sadly, none of them appear to be free besides the demo font which is the thin version Paul Quest is using, which is a shame. It's like $350 for all of them lol.

Had a look at that font.  As I thought, the element directions are causing the problem for 0, D & P.

In layman's terms ('cause I'm a layman/amateur typographer myself):

Most, if not all, digital typefaces/font files like True Type, Open Type, Post Script, etc., are simply collections of closed lines that run in one of two directions: clockwise or counterclockwise.  The difference in direction between two boundaries will determine how the resulting space is "filled":

• The background space is "white/empty"
• Counterclockwise lines start "black" spaces
• Clockwise lines start "white/empty" spaces
• When the lines are in opposite directions, a "black" or "white/empty" results (outer-to-inner direction)
• When the lines are in the same direction, the resulting "color" remains the same (the grey line shows the results of the direction problem in the example)

And that is what happened to this font.  I've fixed it and tested it in MS Word -- the regular font linked above has the problem; the fixed version does not.

PM me your address and I'll send you the fix, MI.

This one ends rather abruptly, so the finale might appear fairly quickly...or in another week like the previous ones.

Regardless, here's part 3.

A week later it is/was. The finale of Paul Quest II is right here.

I suppose I'll still check out the others, but I won't be posting them here anymore for obvious reasons.
