Quest for Infamy / Re: game freezes trying to move north past treants
« on: July 25, 2014, 09:45:28 PM »
It's not that going to the bank prevents the problem from ever happening. It's that if your game is in the condition where it's going to happen upon entering the treant screen, then entering the bank first will correct the problem.

We could get the actor for Ned O'King back easily enough, I'm sure. But it seems that his lines were delivered perfectly and won't require any updates.  ;D

Quest for Infamy / Re: Steam question

Funnily enough, I think that economically speaking, the answer to the first question changes over time, which is why there are sales at all. It's supply and demand - demand decreases over time as more people already own whatever is being sold and no longer need one, so fewer people buy it. Eventually, you reach a point where decreasing the price brings in enough new sales (either cheapskates who were waiting for sales or people who just couldn't afford to pay full price) that it compensates for the decreased income per sale and amounts to more money per time period. That's when the sale happens. Permanent price decreases work the same way. Particularly when it comes to software, there's no additional cost for selling more units, so the effort can be put to improving the product or making a new one to start selling when the previous one has saturated the market.

In short, it's possible to wait for a sale, but then you don't get to play the game while you're waiting, and all of your friends will be talking freely about it by then. This is why I so rarely play video games anymore.

Banter and Chit-Chat! / Re: Wot I'm Reading - The Book Thread

Agreed with Wheel of Time being too drawn out. I really enjoyed it early on, but then it seemed like entire books went by and nothing happened, largely because there are too many main characters in too many places, so you only get a chapter or two of action with each of the many plot threads. I thought the end of book... nine? was an amazing moment, and then book ten consisted almost entirely of every character in the series reacting to that and then maybe delivering one other line of dialogue or talking about how they didn't have a plan for doing whatever they'd be doing in book eleven.

I finished Raising Steam (highly recommended, perhaps even more than most previous Discworld books) and have moved on to my backlog of children's books - plowed through the latest Dork Diaries this morning, and now I'm putting off the new Lemony Snicket anthology and starting the Percy Jackson series to check out The School for Good and Evil. It's already got a sequel, so a lot will depend on how much I enjoy it. It's pretty good in the first few sections - the protagonist is pretty dislikeable, which is clearly intentional and a very good sign.

being so smart.  :o

No sliding puzzle or Rubik's Cube hints, got it.

As a general hint for peg puzzles in all contexts, you need to consider the geometry of the puzzle and how it changes when you make moves. For example, the triangular puzzle has three central pegs surrounded by a row of pegs on the edge of the puzzle. You may notice that you can never jump an edge peg over another edge peg and land in the center. Therefore, if you have two central pegs and jump one over the other, you'll land on the edge and the center will be forever empty! You can only preserve those central pegs by jumping edge pegs over them and into the empty spaces in the center. This is true for peg-jumping games of all shapes and sizes, and is vital to keep in mind as you formulate your solutions.

Count me interested in the TTF - I do a fair bit of subtitling and am always on the lookout for interesting fonts, but most of them are just whatever's in my Fonts directory.

Windows 8.1

Microsoft doesn't want people USING their operating systems - just buying them, installing them, yelling at the devs when they learn all the things they can't do anymore, and throwing them away and buying iPads or something.

Just to be clear: Not trying to be flippant or speak for the programmers about what might possibly be an actual issue, although I'm hearing a lot that running from Program Files requires admin privilege and installing it in another directory might fix it... but Microsoft really haven't been very user-friendly lately, have they?

When I don't have any unread manga handy and can't be bothered to go buy more, I'm reading through "Raising Steam", the latest Discworld novel. You can't go wrong with Terry Pratchett, unless you've got one of those painful physical conditions where it hurts to laugh. Then you'd probably better read something else.

The chair needs to be high enough to reach from your butt to the floor, and the desk should come up to just under the things that are on top of it.

They should also be made of some kind of materials. Immaterial chairs can be fun at parties, but are otherwise not very good furniture.

I hate to post my own video here, but part of the joke is seeing how many views it brings in. This is my response to the revelation that Microsoft is paying Youtube producers $3 for every thousand views on videos that promote the XBOne. (No, this video doesn't count - not only does it not meet the criteria, I haven't been invited as part of a network and I don't ever get any money for any videos as a matter of principle.)

I'd like to know if there's any future for Torin's Passage, if he can find better people to work with - I can't imagine that license would be as hard to get as LSL was.

The reports I read said that he pleaded no contest, if I recall correctly. That means he accepts the sentence for the crime without necessarily outright declaring his guilt - but I think this is the kind of charge you'd want to defend if you thought there was any way you could prevail. Maybe he just didn't want anyone looking into his past in any further detail.

I liked Battle Chess II: Chinese Chess, although they didn't always seem to follow the stated rules. Sometimes, the computer would make seemingly illegal moves.

Everything I know about Casablanca, I learned from Red Dwarf or Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.
