Banter and Chit-Chat! / Re: A Lament for Adventure Games
« on: August 21, 2019, 05:12:39 AM »
Dave Gilbert? The reason is he does that one genre of adventure game story that people still buy. He does them exceedingly well too, as we both know. My wheelhouse, and I know yours is too, is more sci-fi / comedy or fantasy (or a mixture of those) and anything I've seen from those genres don't seem to sell as well. Heck, if Activision couldn't sell the new KQ, I don't think fantasy adventures are a thing anymore. Yet, I still love them!

I think the reality is that a certain type of adventure games are still made and quite successful as far as a niche market goes, but everything else is dead. If it's not post-apocalyptic / anghst filled drama, it doesn't sell. This isn't a slight at those producers, they make some great games, but there's very little variety in the genre anymore. We're not dead though Steve, at least you and I will still make games until we're both dead. I firmly believe that.

Quest for Infamy / Re: Quest for Infamy v2.0 progress thread

As far as I'm aware, the only thing we need to do to release 2.0 is to make sure it's not broken. So testing. If you guys would like to test, I'm happy to add you to the testing group and let you have at it. I'd love to get it out there too. Similar to Steve, I just haven't had the time to devote to this last year really. Life is just busy with a full time job and three little kids at home. That said, I want this done so let me know so we can get it out there.

Godfather 2 is the greatest sequel of all time. There's no need to continue this thread now I've dropped that wisdom. :)

Well, there WAS a reason it wasn't on GoG as we both know... :)

I'm confident it will be released. The updates might be few and far between but the last ones have talked about recording the voice work which means the game is done.

Scott's involvement I'm not sure. He never wrote the games in the first place, Mark did the designs for the most part, so I assume that's the same with SV. I know he's battled cancer during the development so I can only assume that's a major reason for his low profile.

That's so true! Hitchhikers was the hardest game.

If you liked the Gabriel Knight series, I'd suggest Cognition and Moebius. Both are pretty good (Cognition is awesome). Gray Matter is okay too.

There's a game called Captain Disaster - it's fairly new and quite funny. Space Quest style humour.

And get anything from Wadget Eye Games, the Blackwell series is awesome and there's heaps of others too.

I don't mind TT games, they are what they are. They're easy to play and don't require any real effort on my part, and that's good sometimes. Borderlands was amazing, they just nailed so many things right with that. There's quite a number of stinkers in their catalog too, GoT was poor for example.

I feel for the employees who do seem to have been screwed over here. I don't think it's anything for adventure game developers to worry about, the circumstances seem to be TellTale being poor managers of finance, taking on expensive IP's and being in crunch mode the entire time. There's plenty of adventure game companies out there doing alright.

Roehm to Ruin will be out this year. We've got one segment we (me really, I keep promising and not getting it done) to finish (we kinda added a cool little mini-game to the thing, it's fun and completely unexpected so it ticks the boxes we go for) then there's voice work and it's done. It's actually pretty polished now, with the exception of that final segment.

Heh, nah. We've got awesome fans who are there. I just think the POS fans at that particular time were vocal in the "Hey Vivendi, we're doing a new KQ right now and it's awesome. Give the team the rights or be forever known as evil." kind of way.

We ignored Vivendi and they never said anything. :)

Honestly, there's nothing to sue when it comes to a free remake. We didn't make any money from it. The worst thing that could have happened was a cease and desist order (well, they COULD have sued us but that's not likely honestly) but in my opinion, the only people who got those were making way too much noise about their games. With the exception of Phoenix Online and The Silver Lining, where I think that was more a rabid and loud number of their fans were making way too much noise.

What do you want to know about the process? It differs greatly between remakes and original works for instance.

Glad you enjoyed it! I personally had a great time, and it was especially awesome Josh Mandel and Ken Allen were there.
