Banter and Chit-Chat! / Re: Heroine's Quest - trailer + voices preview video

You can now make your own boxes/DVD cases etc for HQ, and just in case you need extra incentive, we're holding a small competition where you can have a cameo sprite in the game :)

Join the Heroine's Quest box contest, and win a cameo in the game!

(1) Download the box art for the game from http://crystalshard.net/dls/hq_boxart.zip
(2) Print one of the box art images, and use it to make a DVD case, CD case, or actual game box for HQ.
(3) Take a picture of it in suitable surroundings. What is fitting is up to you; you could find a snowy landscape to place it in, or cosplay as a troll holding the case, or create some fan art and place the case to the side, or anything else you can think of. Be creative!
(4) Post the picture in the AGS forums in this thread. Otherwise, if you have Facebook, please put it in our FB group, and link to it from your own Facebook timeline or wall.

The deadline is October 16th (23:59 GMT). After that, the Crystal Shard team will act as judges to determine the three best entries. The three winners will get a cameo in the game: describe what your character should look like and we will place it in Heroine's Quest. One cameo is alive and well, one is imprisoned, and the last one is dead (because hey, the game is about Ragnarok). The cameos are not hidden; a player is likely to come across them in a normal playthrough.

The first price gets first pick and an animated cameo; the other two are static. Your character must be suitable to the environment, so e.g. robots or ninjas are not an option; and note that this is
a cameo, not a moving or speaking role. By submitting a picture, you give us permission to use it as promotional material on e.g. our website; we'll include your name if we use it. Crystal Shard retains full rights to the game, including the sprites used for the cameo.

There is a Paypal link at www.crystalshard.net (plus other games!); and the same button has now also been added to the Heroine's Quest website: http://crystalshard.net/hq.htm

Main thing for us is that people enjoy the games we make :)

Yes, the project is getting very close. But it'll still be a little wait to iron out all the bugs and get the balancing right.

We do this in our free time as a hobby, and we want it to be free so that anyone can download and enjoy it. It's definitely been a lot of work, and certainly a labor of love for Corby, the art lead.

Plus, who doesn't like Norse mythology? :) I actually learnt quite a bit about Viking myths while working on this!

See first post for a new video showing some of the characters and voices in HQ :)

You need to talk to all the townsfolk. There's also a fellow outside of the gates fishing.

The game has a lot of different areas, and a couple are gloomy, but lots of other locations are quite cheerful.

So I wouldn't say the whole game is intended to feel gloomy, there's some areas which are anything but :)

Crystal Shard is proud to announce the release of Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok, available for FREE download!

Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is an adventure / RPG hybrid. Like in many adventure games, you have a world to save, and must use your wit, guile and inventory to puzzle your way through. Like in many roleplaying games, you can customize your character with various classes and skills, and must train yourself in combat to stand a chance against the fierce monsters in your way.

The game is designed in the spirit and atmosphere of the classics, and strives to have the same high quality of art, music, and plot. With multiple character classes and several solutions to many puzzles, the game has excellent replayability.

Features:
- Explore the rich world of Norse mythology!
- Three character classes with separate side quests: use your strength as a warrior, the arcane arts as a sorceress, wit and guile as a rogue, or create a hybrid with skills from multiple classes.
- 32 distinct voice acted characters with animated portraits.
- Over 100 hand-painted backgrounds and 10,000 sprites in animations.
- Many monsters, including giants, trolls, and svartalfar.
- High replayability due to optional quests, alternative solutions, and the three different classes.

Available for download from www.crystalshard.net/hq.htm .

Reminds me of that game Meta where the interface is an AGS Studio project and the game is made of horrible Paint graphics. The difficult part is wrestling with the interface to make the game itself playable.

That's the game I did the Awesmoe (sic) Quest graphics for but didn't want any of the credit :O

And no, I didn't used to be THAT bad at graphics... perhaps when I was 5 years old maybe  :-[

Anyway, I do sometimes get a giggle out of sketches like Bt's ;)

This is my opinion only, so I'm not speaking for anyone, but selling an old-school low res adventure game isn't a big money maker (quite a niche market), needs to be marketed well, and once money gets involved, then there's the obligation to keep people up to date and meet deadlines (if set).

Making money does give the opportunity to hire more people, but having more people on the team also means extra management is required. And if you're paying them, you need to make sure you have enough funds to continue to pay, otherwise they may decide not to continue working on the project.

My viewpoint on a Kickstarter is that it can certainly help with getting more people on board, but even if you look at the funds raised for QFI - $60k is not a lot between a team of artists, programmers, composers and story writer. It means that everyone is able to spend a little more time working on the game, but are still constrained by time they need to spend working in their normal job, plus spending time with family.

At this stage, the core HQ team doesn't need to expand as the sprites are being done at a good pace and a lot of the game is coded already. As I mentioned, the only thing we will need extra help with is a possible voice pack. And the game's come so far on no budget already, ideally we'd like to keep it that way.

As someone who is working on HQ, I can say that most of the resources are there. Remaining are some animations (mostly combat), which Corby is furiously working on, as well as coding and testing.

We're looking into the possibility of getting voice actors for the game, which may be tricky, as a lot of good voice actors don't do work pro bono. But we'll have to see what's out there. It is something which would be nice to have, as a good voice pack can really enhance a game. So stay tuned :)

IQ Chat / Re: Bt eats Marmite to Prove His Love for QFI and IQ

If Marmite is anything like Vegemite, it's not terrible, though I can't say it's my favourite food :P

And Vegemite keeps for years! I think I ate some that was 5 years old and it still tasted the same.
