Title: The Quest For Infamy Companion (Strategy Guide/Art Book/Hint Book w/Decoder)
Post by: Blackthorne on August 19, 2013, 08:18:19 PM
 (http://www.infamous-adventures.com/qfi/MockUpArtBook.png)

So... what about an Art Book/Strategy Guide/Hint Book with decoder window for Quest For Infamy? Yay or nay?

Well, the reason I ask about interest is because to make something like this, we'd probably have to use crowd funding (Kickstarter, et. al) to raise the initial kind of money we'd need to be able to make these - not only to pay the price for the production of the book, the creation of the custom decoder window, eBook versions, etc - and to pay someone to construct the layout of the book; to arrange the text written, the artwork, and create the decoder text to be seen - etc.

It wouldn't be a really high goal project, at least to do an initial run of say - 100-150 copies - probably with a basic goal of $3,000 to $5,000 for an initial production of that - but we'd have stretch goal ideas for a larger print run, hardcover editions, etc. I know we'd love to produce something like this, but I wanted to not only gauge the response and want for an item like this from all you people - but if we do decide to run a crowdfunding campaign, to get your input on what you'd like to see from the campaign.

We don't wish to tread into something like this lightly, and you fans have been our only support in this - we don't have any corporate sponsors or the like, so keeping you involved in the process is very important to us.

So - it's really important to me (Bt) and the rest of the team to get your thoughts. Would you pledge so something like this? Any ideas for the campaign? I know the book is a physical reward - but we'd be doing a eBook version of it too for Nook/Kindle/Pdf - but those would require one physical element; red decoder glasses you can wear as you stare at the screen, etc. Anyway - Thoughts?

I already said this on Facebook, but I will SO be in for a Kickstarter to get an old-style hint book of the game.

Yeah, it'd be a combination Art Book/Hint book - It'd be arranged so that the art on the pages would be relevant to the content of the hints/strategies on the pages - plus, the decoder window would be a custom job that would have more original artwork by our artists on it as well.  Plus there would be historical information about the world the game takes place in (Tahrsein) and bits of information about other lands, etc - the history of development on the game.  Most likely naked pictures of James Mulvale, our composer.  (I kid, I kid!)  But, yeah - chock full of hints to get you through the game, plus a few redherrings, silly questions and outright lies.

You can count on me to heave in a coin or two. It will be interesting to see how you think about the reward tiers for this Kickstarter.

$20 - 2 naked paintings of James Mulvale
$50 - 1 naked painting of James Mulvale
$100 - No naked paintings of James Mulvale
$1000 - Okay, we'll never bring up the subject of naked James Mulvale again.

I'm definitely in support of this.  I think the red herrings are a cute idea but only (IMHO) if the correct answers are given afterwards.  I'd be frustrated otherwise--I like my walkthroughs to be pretty straightforward.  But this old-school style with the decoder window is just awesome.  I'll back you guys for this, no question, regardless of how you want to design it.

Naked pics, I'd back for twice as much!   :P

I'm a little disappointed that there is no mention of using the old yellow "Yes & No" pens to reveal hints -- that it's not even being considered.  I thought you guys wanted to go "old school" with these projects?

What could be better than an elegant, hard cover edition completely marked-up with yellow ink stained and bleeding through the one-time-use hint pages?

The least you could do is make a "Reveal-O-Matic Electronic Hint Revealer" (ā la SQ4) for revealing hints for the digital edition -- that way, the hint could be hidden once you moved off that page -- no more planned obsolescence!

Well, no matter; I'm fully on board with whatever you people at IQ choose...

I always enjoyed the "first person" hintbooks, like 7th Guest or the Space Quest series.  7th Guest read like a horror novel while Roger Wilco's ruminations were often times very hilarious!

Personally I don't think I would back a hint book on Kick Starter. While it is a nice throw back to the old school days, I would be more likely to throw some funds at helping another team get their game off the ground ahead of a hint book. I

I couldn't really justify spending the same amount for the book as the game. A lot more work goes into the game and it provides more entertainment. The book is just a novelty.

If it's cheaper than the game then I might be interested.

Totally, I still think it is a good idea and will clearly appeal to a certain group of fans. Just thought it may help you gauge interest to hear from both fans who are keen and also those who are not.

I think I remember this being brought up in the Kickstarter comments. I'm interested, but it will come down to the costs.

I'd probably be more inclined towards a standard art/hint/strategy book without a decoder. I know that's how the Sierra hint books did it, but I never was a big fan of that gimmick.

I donīt get it. When you choose the $125 pledge you get both game DVD versions and the soft and hardcover book? In the chart this does not have the checkmark.

So what do you get for the $150 tier and the $125 tier?

The $150 tier also includes the collector's Big Box, Sven.

Okay, you want the Hardcover book and the Big Box Edition?  That's either at $300 or $315 there!  Added the $300 just now for a Hardcover Book and the Big Box tier.

For the $125 tier, you get the digital version of the COMPANION, not the GAME, + Hardcover book + Softcover book.

Right, BT?

My feelings on hint books are as follows.  They should be used as a last resort only.  What is the fun and purpose of playing a game by using a strategy guide every step of the way?  The hint book ruins the challenge and the feel of success when completeing a particular difficult quest or puzzle.  In the past I have purchased Strat guides along with the game but realized i just spent extra money that ruined the exp of the game.

As for when the Quest for Infamy guide is due out:   It will be released when its finished and not before!!!!!   ;)

Russian version is in progress (even though it was never announced officially).

And no need to be rude. That might be a surprise to you, but comments like yours won't motivate anyone to work harder, really.

I'll let Steve talk to the companion book, he knows better than I on that one.

1.1 will be out pretty soon I'd think, I'm aiming for as quick as possible! We've finished the bug fixing and the minor overhaul of stats and magic. We've got three new "scenes" to finish adding in, the major graphical work is done on those, just a matter of getting it all in-game and the puzzle elements programmed in. Part of the patch is also fine-tuning the entire game so it works smoothly on tablets (although that's behind the scenes stuff you won't notice in the game itself at this stage). The next major step is testing it, so if it's all pretty solid we should have a release in the near future, if it's not so solid we'll have to go back and fiddle some more. I'd love to give you a firm date, but I really just can't!

And I'm honestly relieved that the QFI companion is still in shipping mode b/c I was worried that maybe it had been cancelled.  I know it's a lot more work that you guys had anticipated (and with a new baby in the mix...WAY more time consuming, ha), but I'm glad that it's still coming.  QFI is a very awesome, yet very complicated, non-linear game that I still have yet to complete (quit laughing), so I am REALLY eager to get my hands on this.  I'm assuming though that this guidebook is not actually a "walkthrough" for each class, correct?

Thanks again for all you guys' hard, tireless work.  We really appreciate all you do.

Hey Kal - I hope you feel better man.  I'm still shipping out stuff, it's coming, I promise - I just move like a tortoise with it.  I can only get a few packages together a day, and I'm working my way up to the bigger ones.

So, I guess the lesson here for future Kickstarts is:

Pledge less money = get your swag quicker?...   ???

No, the lesson here is we use a fulfillment house next time! I talked about that in our last updated.  There are places now that will take your stuff, package and ship it for a fee.  If I ever did another kickstarter, I'd calculate the fee for that service into the KS goal.

Doing it all yourself blows.

Yeah, I really love all the physical stuff we had made up; it's really awesome, but distributing it is another separate, full time job.  We definitely underestimated that part when we did our first kickstarter.

I can see why Telltale discontinued it, though I suppose now with the level of success and income they have, they could afford to outsource it.

I was very dissapointed when they closed the store at TTG.
Well Deadalic for example sell all their merchandising about another company now. Als DoubleFine about Fangamer. But I think they want a lot of money for it?

@Blackthorne (http://www.infamous-quests.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2)
TTG doesnīt have to worry about such things thatīs right. 8) Sadly they doesnīt make games for me anymore. :(

Just downloaded the digital copy of this wonderful book !   :)

Instead of blowing my monthly page allotment at work by printing all 124 pages on the color laser printer there, I'll just have to wait for the hardcopy to arrive in the mail...   ;)

Seriously, this is a jewel, and I cannot wait to put it up on my bookshelf...

...and then promptly take it back down to begin reading & re-reading the heck out of it !!!  ;D

Thanks to everyone involved with this project: all the fine folks at IQ, and the generous contributors to the Kickstarter.

Hey Shoptroll!  Yes, I'm still shipping things out; did a bunch this week already, and I'm doing more next week.  Should be a few more weeks, but it should be all out by then! Whew!

Hooray!  Is there a way to find out when I need to start panicking that I haven't received my copy?

(Was very happy to see the digital copy email from backerkit too!)

Same procedure as last year, so quoting myself:

Any news on the companion? When it'll be released?

Still the companion hasn't arrived on my doorstep. I backed via backerkit, Payment has been processed on 20/09/2014. As a bavarian beekeeper I'm a very patient guy (and appreciated the bee references in QfI very much!). I fully understand raising a kid consumes a lot of time. You have my understanding for the delays in shipping, even when then they are measured rather in months then in weeks.
But: My patience isn't infinite. I am one of the last backers on backerkit. IIrc there were about 700 backers. It cannot be too difficult putting a couple of books in an enevelope a day.

Deleting unpopular posts is an awesome way of communication. Not.

I posted this link which you deleted with my post:
https://www.amazon.com/Quest-Infamy-Companion-Steven-Alexander/dp/168222189X (https://www.amazon.com/Quest-Infamy-Companion-Steven-Alexander/dp/168222189X)

The companion is available from Amazon.com. "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com." So no 3rd party seller via market place.
I backed 35 USD including p&p via backerkit and got nothing yet after more than two years.
These are absolutely bad business practices.  I want my money back.

Hi! I responded to you in a PM.  Just to clear it up, though, it IS print on demand when you order from Amazon.  The company that I had the books printed with lists it on Amazon, and each one is printed to order on there, unless it's bought used.

I looked here and saw a lot of third party sellers - https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/168222189X/ref=tmm_other_meta_binding_new_olp_sr?ie=UTF8&condition=new&qid=&sr= (https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/168222189X/ref=tmm_other_meta_binding_new_olp_sr?ie=UTF8&condition=new&qid=&sr=)

A lot are selling new, which is odd, as I wonder where they got these from.  I wonder if some backers gave these book brokers their copies.  Because the only copies printed up in mass are the ones currently in my house!

Well ok, if amazon is selling guides on a print for print basis, I'll buy one for 20 bucks, however I'd rather give Blackthorne and company the money period! :)  Chadly.

Hi,

First of all: I appreciate your work.

Hi! I responded to you in a PM.  Just to clear it up, though,
You should have written that PM in 2015, when I first asked where my book is.

it IS print on demand when you order from Amazon.  The company that I had the books printed with lists it on Amazon, and each one is printed to order on there, unless it's bought used.
I know what print on demand is. I sold my first book that way. By the way, I sent out 500 books by mail myself. Tell you what, it was a great relief, when the pile went away and I could see the floor again.

I knew you were doing print on demand. No real publishing house makes this sort of books nowadays. Print on demand became obvious, when you wrote that the first batch had quality issues. It's really odd that pre-ordered items aren't sent out, but customers are able to purchase via amazon.com.

Really I'm a very relaxed man. My bees taught me patience. But after all that excuses of yours I don't believe you anymore. As a response to yesterdays PM I set a time limit. If I get my book by then, everything will be fine. Otherwise we will have to talk about a refund.

you only backed for the book?
or did you get other items?

like im waiting on like 2 of everything, cards x2 calendar , hoodie, retail qfi hard box, hard cover book etc
not trying to send harsh vibes just curious, if you had other stuff or just the companion.

I only backed for the book. It's the only physical item, I'm waiting for.
I pledged also for digital copies of Order of the Thorne and Roehm To Ruin.

yeah freind I hear that...However in IQ and Steve's personal defense he has health problems that neither you, or I can possible relate to. Be patient because he or the the company doesnt owe you or me a Fucking thing. With that said, am I pissed that i have not received what was promised and i paid for, Hell yes I am. However my money for QFI/Roehm to Ruin/FOF, and the bloody strat guide, went to see these games made. Which for the most part they have, 2 out of three isn't bad, considering Kickstarter's Rep. Cut the man a break folks, all you did was pledge for a book?  Unless you have personally ran a company and or a Kickstarter,?  Chalk your pledge money as a loss, like I did last night playing poker at my buddy's house.  KS was and is a gamble with no guarantee's....   Nuff Said.  Chadly.
