Title: Infamous Quests at GDC 2014
Post by: Broomie on April 23, 2014, 03:07:41 PM
Shawn, Josh and Steve (Bt) went to GDC in San Francisco last month to show off Quest For Infamy to the public! We had several backers show up, meet and chat with us - as well as play QFI in our show loft!  It was an amazing time - we were able to show the game to a lot of people, and we met some amazing people and peers!  Ragnar Tornquist stopped by and showed off a bit of "Dreamfall" The upcoming Longest Journey Sequel, and I can say - it was awesome!  If you haven't seen the game play video that's out there, check it out.  I can say, it's a really cool experience to see the developer play the game they've been working on, and talk with them about development, and trade war stories.  He also played Quest For Infamy while there, and was really charmed by it, apparently! Heh.  Jane Jensen was also there, in our loft, showing off Moebius and Gabriel Knight: Sins of The Father 20th Anniversary Edition - and she was sweet, charming and gracious to us - sharing stories of working at Sierra, working on KQ6 and sharing office space with Scott Murphy of Space Quest fame.

Shawn and Steve, doing what they do, and Jane Jensen, smiling for the camera!

Phoenix Online, our publisher, really put us out there and had us meet with many of the press - it was a very exciting experience, and I had to pinch myself many times to make myself believe I was there.  Many times during our trip, I kept thinking about you all - our backers - and how we got to make this game because of you, and I know I can never say thank you enough for believing in us and taking a chance with us.  We held our own amongst others who had Kickstarters who raised far more than us, but I know our fans are more fervent, loyal, inspiring and amazing!  I can't wait to be able to share the game with you - and, like I said, we'll have big news coming soon.

Had to share this. We attended "The Adventure Party" where we met some great people, like Oded Sharon on the far Right, Dave Gilbert behind him, and some guy on the left named Ron Gilbert. Apparently made something like Monkey House or Island, I dunno..

I'm kidding.  Ron Gilbert - the man who created the SCUMM Engine and made Monkey Island? To say I was humbled is me putting it lightly!

The Whole Crew up in the loft at GDC

Anyway - just wanted to share a few photos - and, again, say thank you backers.  The end is in sight.  We all still have more to come, but we're almost there - and it's been my privilege to create this game for you.  I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, and I will always acknowledge that I couldn't have made this game without the help of about 1,900 friends.

There's not much I can add to this that Steve hasn't already said, but I'll try! My reflections here are really personal moments for me over the week (Steve's really covered well the QFI side of things!)

The biggest thing I took away from the whole GDC adventure was how much people loved our game! We had a LOT of media people view our game and so many of them just played it, getting absorbed into the story and the humor. It's a great thing to see your work being enjoyed by others.

There were a two major highlights for me, professional and personal. On a professional level it was just the biggest thrill meeting some of my co-workers for the first time in real life. While working on the internet certainly has it's advantages, working online and living in Australia certainly brings a feeling of isolation at times which really sucks. So meeting Jason Lamb, Dave Smith, Josh Walts and catching up again with Steve were the biggest highlights for me. Getting a chance to meet people who were peers in the fan-game scene like Cesar and Katie, who I've spoken to many times over the years but never met IRL was brilliant. We had the best time!

Jason Lamb and Myself right after we had the best food at a small cafe in San Francisco.

The personal things for me were meeting some of my adventure game heroes in Jane Jensen, Ragnar Tornquist and Ron Gilbert. Seeing Jane on a daily basis for the week and watching her professionalism and genuine warmth shine through was a privilege to see and to have my "fan moment" and quiz her about her work on Police Quest III on our final day was also brilliant. A very gracious lady who shared some great Sierra stories with us, so a genuine highlight of our trip. And running into Ron Gilbert at the Adventure Game party was also brilliant. A nice guy, regardless of his "grumpy gamer" online persona who wasn't taken aback when a slightly drunk Aussie rudely interrupted his conversation just to get a photo!

An excellent time, our Publishers POS showed us a great time and worked us hard, and it was brilliant!

Getting to meet-and-greet the press at this presentation was a terrific opportunity for IQ to help "get the word out."

1) Was the media/press primarily geared towards the adventure game community, or was the general video gaming community well represented?

2) While we've had several great articles about QFI and IQ so far, do you expect that as you get closer to releasing QFI that you'll get more article published about your efforts?

3) When QFI is released, do you anticipate that it will get reviewed by the big boys / non-adventure game community, even if it's only in a "throwback/classics" or "indie" section of their publication (either print media or internet)?

This was EVERYBODY.  The general video gaming community.  I mean, we met people from IGN and PC-Gamer, and they were thrilled to see an old-school Sierra style game.  Really, the reactions we got from people in the press who are used to covering this amazing next gen stuff - these jaded reporters.... the absolutely smiled and grinned ear to ear when they saw our game. Seriously... it made ME smile inside. People greeted our game like an old friend.  As one journalist said "Man... you made me have a flashback... to something that never happened!"  So, as a little indie adventure game in the midst of all this crazy stuff... it felt good.

Yeah, our publisher, Phoenix Online Publishing, has a ton of press lined up for us.  Seriously, the guys there, Scott and Mario... they're amazing.  I can't say enough about how awesome they are.

Well, I can only hope - several people from the big boys seemed to like us, but there are SO many video games out there, and we are a pretty small niche.  But I suspect we'll get some coverage - I mean, IGN did publish our trailer, so that's a start.
