IQ Chat / Re: Where are all developers of Quest for Infamy hiding????

If I posted what I did to the game every day you'd kill yourself with boredom.

Today for example "Today I spent a few hours trying to work out why during combat Roehm will occasionally miss instead of hit, even if his stats are at 100% to hit. Because of the seemingly random nature of the bug, I played about 300 random combats until I saw a pattern. Then I changed an = to a >= in the code and it was fixed. The end."

That's one of those annoying bugs which are hard to hunt down while the change in the code is very minor. Not unlike something when you mistakenly put an extra semicolon after the if condition in C++ and then things go weird :)

It does make sense from a "representative" form of government.

It could always be worse: not to repeat myself, but...

And I've heard that if we went by popular vote and not the Electoral College, only 4 states -- the most populous -- would matter: California, New York, Florida and Texas.   ;)

At least ~12 states or so are important, Electorally speaking, IIRK from the discussions during the 2004 or  2008 election cycle...

Oh, let's be honest: in every modern election, the Electoral College gets dissed...

What should matter is not the states, but the majority of people. That's how I see it. Consider for example any new party - in the current system it's simply impossible for it to get any traction - the two dominant parties just drown them because of the Electoral College. With global popular voting, small parties would get cumulative result from all states and can actually start competing. The bottom line - Electoral College preserves current dual party status quo. Popular vote would make it more competitive and democratic (pun not intended).

Your vote only counts if you live in one of the swing states.  ;)  Thank you, Electoral College.

Yeah, I wish that would have been fixed already. It's a mess.

Actually may be these are two different themes (or one with two distinct parts?).

First is slow during the dialog with the baron's daughter:

And second one is fast during the chase and escape (this scene and music for it are gold):

I didn't find either of them in the OST.

I believe there was one track in the game that didn't make it, the prelude music - as it had the baron/daughter dialogue mixed in with it... I think.. I don't think that made it in anyway

Yeah, I was looking for that theme and didn't find it. The music there was funny (near the part with cat sound and windows lighting up). May be you can find it in the original (not mixed) form?

and great article on audio scamming http://www.skeptic.com/eskeptic/10-01-06/#feature

Good read (while it's mostly about hardware scams, it mentions the ultrasonic frequencies scam too).

Just got the OST. I noticed that some tracks aren't listed in the m3u file:

Code: [Select]
Beer Beer Beer.mp3
Choose your PAth.mp3
Sneaking.mp3
Steve's Archery tune.mp3
The Beer Song.mp3

Are they supposed to be 95-99 ones?

Also, The Beer Song.mp3 is identical to Beer Beer Beer.mp3.

And thanks for the music of course!

Yeah, I look at selling FLACs as simply functional compressed and pure digital replacement of CDs (which are raw lossless audio). I can encode from CD to any codec I wish with transparency, same with FLAC. And encoding from MP3 as was already mentioned above isn't equivalent. So the fact that they sound the same is only part of the picture. I agree that only a minority would deal with reencoding anyway, but I look at this from the point of view of not reducing functionality.

Those new pseudo formats are a fake (according to this article: https://people.xiph.org/~xiphmont/demo/neil-young.html ). I'm not an expert in it really, but I trust Monty knows what he is saying.

Unless you have serious storage limitations, saving FLACs shouldn't be that hard. They are usually around half the size of the raw WAVs (in the best case). In general I'm surprised though that many major music stores still don't offer it. Some do (Bandcamp, Cdbaby etc.), but for some reason Amazon doesn't. I guess they feel people still like buying physical CDs :)

By the way, I see that AGS still doesn't support Opus. It's better than Vorbis in general (and saves size especially on small sound samples), so it's good to add such support. I'll take a look at it, may be something interesting to help with.

To get around that you would have to add one more step - converting to WAV first with antialiasing filter THEN to lower bitrate MP3/Whatever that transcoding is working from a lossless-version-of-the-lossy-mp3

Yeah, and that is just to clean some of it. That's why it's much easier to just keep FLAC for any future processing :) It's good for master copies.

There was no CD. It would have been a double or triple CD anyway!!

I see, thanks.

Everything was originally rendered down to 320kbps MP3 and then OGG for the game. I've spectrum analyzed 320s vs FLAC vs WAV and the only real loss is psychoacoustic information that wouldn't be heard anyway.

The benefit of FLAC is not that it would sound better than 320 Kbps MP3, but that it has all the original data, so when you encode FLAC -> Lossy codec XYZ, you can still keep it transparent (i.e. the result would sound the same). But when you encode 320 Kbps MP3 -> Lossy codec XYZ, the result might be impossible to keep on the same level of quality even if you set encoding transparency level for the codec XYZ. Simply because each lossy codec has its own ways to cut corners for compression which can be good on their own, but when they combine it becomes worse.

So hopefully in the future you can keep masters in FLAC :)
