Title: SQ2VGA: Self-Destruct Button at the game's end?
Post by: Goatmeal on December 31, 2014, 06:07:41 PM
OK, after playing through SQ2VGA again to record the 5 missing tracks (see my other post), I never thought to ask this when the game was first released 3 years ago:

On the catwalk high above the shuttlebay, as you are trying to avoid the ED-209 droid, you pass by a self-destruct override button that is "out of order" -- naturally.

If you "Hand" the button, the message is that it is stuck, and likely needs some lubricant; when you "Taste" the button, you get an electrocution death -- again, naturally.

However, the next message says that perhaps you should have searched the bathroom more thoroughly...

Since you get all 250 points at the games' end, it's not necessary to finish the game.  Or not something for which you would get points -- if you could do anything at all to it.

• What is being missed from the bathroom?  Is it something on the wall that offers a hint?  Another character in another stall?
• Is it a puzzle that wasn't incorporated into the final game?
• Is it a Red Herring -- both the button AND the resulting "clue"?

Thanks!

Wow. Three years and I think this is the first mention I've heard of this. Heh-heh.

So... what's the answer?   >:(

And do I get a coveted IA No Prize™?   ;D

I think it's just a random death from licking the button. The text saying to search the bathroom more thoroughly is just us being assholes.

This is absolutely correct.  I remember the whole discussion about adding the button pretty well.  We threw that in very last minute, and it really was just to screw around with people.

I think we intended to put something in there at a later time, but ran OUT of development time, so there it stands.  And there it will.

I figured as much.  Even though the asteroid is set to a decaying orbit, eliminating the asteroid's self-destruction would remove A LOT of the tension and urgency to get in the escape pod/shuttle at the end...

You ran out of development time???  Dude, you had like 5 years to work on it!!!  ;)

Now here's my IA No Prize™?!?!?  >:(

Unfortunately, IA doesn't exist anymore so no prize.

Wrong, Klytos.

IA will ALWAYS exist -- both in our hearts, and in our memories...

Well, it's certainly no IA No Prize™, but if all you have is a lousy IQ No Prize™ as a consolation, I SUPPOSE I'll be the better person here and grudgingly accept it...   >:(

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell, I do concede that it is partially my fault for not bringing it up much, much earlier...   :-[

At least before IA went the way of the dodo...  :-\

you mean people can actually get a no prize?  I thought that if you got a no prize then you were getting a prize therefore it can't be a no prize unless you don't get the prize as there is a prize involved and not no prize.

Because the IA bar entry was not enough screwing with people?

From memory I pixel hunted the shit (figuratively) out of that bathroom for way too long. You screwed me, and I thank you for it.
