My God.

It's like he's reading my mind.

Time for the tinfoil hat, Comrade Lambonius, to prevent such violations of your noggin!

Goatmeal, you're so old-school.  It's awesome.

Another fellow mapper here.

I started out using GEM Draw Plus for DOS in the early 1990s, then migrated to Excel for Windows (works SO well at achieving perfectly aligned boxes and lines).  I still use Excel today!

X-Wing was so delightfully challenging, and yet extremely addictive, and with great AI, because it always felt like no single mission ever went exactly the same way twice.

Yep.

While the first Wing Commander was enjoyable enough, I never was interested in it enough to continue on with the rest of the series, let alone finish WC1.  It just felt like attacking a series of scaled bitmaps* -- and trying to "land" at the front of the Tiger's Claw was more than a little off putting when there was only four views of the carrier: Front-above, 2 Sides & Rear, iirc.

But when X-Wing came out, their use of low-res polygonal shapes really felt like you were moving in 3-dimenional space and around "solid" objects -- fluid and simply phenomenal.

* While the same could be said about Wolfenstien, Doom and all of the early bitmap FPSs, at least you could move around within 3-D environments in those games; the black backdrop of "space" in WC added very little to the immersive experience.

I know it's utter blasphemy to post this on an adventure game web forum, but I'd like to see a revival of LucasArts' space combat simulator.

I thoroughly enjoyed all 4 games in the X-wing series, and still play quick single-player missions in X-Wing Vs Tie Fighter from time to time...

I was wandering around the internet today and came across this. Written by Raymond E Feist, who in my opinion is the single greatest fantasy writer since Tolkien. This, more than anything anyone at IQ has said, explains Mr Roehm.

"I have no "evil" characters in my novels.  I have characters who do evil things, but that's not the same thing.  Everyone is the hero of his/her own life story."

You're welcome.

Right on, Klytos!

Motivation is definitely the key.

Although Feist only had editorial input on Dynamix's "Betrayal At Krondor," it was such a tremendously well-written game that I immediately started reading "Magician" in 1993 and every book up through "Krondor: Tear Of The Gods" (2000).

Unfortunately, life got too busy in the early 2000s to continue following such a massive series of novels, but catching up with the remaining 14 books are definitely on my "someday" reading wishlist...

he lost me at the 'my opinion is the only one that matters.' line.

When you stand before the Jimquisition, you would do well to heed his wisdom...

"I didn't expect a kind of English Jimquisition..."

Now that Ilyich has broken the pre-80s barrier, here are a couple more...

John Carpenter's "Dark Star" (1974), co-starring the original "Smart Bomb", Thermostellar Bomb #20.  Definitely a great melding of trippy early '70s comedy and sci-fi.

"The Black Hole" (1979), Disney's attempt at jumping on the "Star Wars" bandwagon, still holds a fond place in my heart -- even though they could have picked a better story than remaking "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" in space.

And I'm sure I'll take a lot of heat for this, but Michael Crichton's "Westworld" (1973) is the superior example of 'theme-park-run-amok' over his "Jurassic Park" (1993), and "The Terminator" (1984) owes a debt of gratitude to Yul Brenner's 'Gunslinger' character...

I saw Oz the other day. Not bad, but not great. Terribly miscast but it was enjoyable at least. I can see them moving onto Wizard of Oz next.

Just watched the Red Letter Media review of "Oz" last night -- they also said every part was horribly miscast.  As a fan of Sam Raimi, Reviewer Jay said it almost followed the "Army of Darkness" plot...

However, they said that Disney went out of their way to avoid any obvious references to "Wizard of Oz" since Warner Bros owns the MGM movie, as well as some of the movie-specific changes from the book (the book's silver shoes changes to ruby so they would "pop" on screen in color, IIRC)...

Yes!  That background will change from night to dawn to day to dusk, depending on your local time.  I don't know when the exact hours it does occur, though.

Bt

Also just noticed the "early morning" background, too!

So sad, Geology totally rocks man

BT should definitely try again, if only he was a little "boulder" in his actions...
